Joys of Nighttime Parenting

It's almost 2am and I've been up the last hour with a toddler who awoke with a croupy cough/breathing. Took him outside into the cool/misty (it's sprinkling) air for a while and now we're back in his room with the windows open and piles of blankets keeping us warm.

I'm really tired but too worried to go to sleep, you know? I know I'll wake up if he starts coughing, but I can't be observing his sleepy breathing when I'm asleep. Ugh!

Anyway, while I battle with myself over whether or not to sleep, and try to ignore that tell-tale tickle in my throat that says I'm next, who else is awake!? Why are you up and sleepless instead of happily a-snooze?

  • Awe I hope your little guy feels better soon and that you don't get anything!
I'm up because my mind is racing. My husband and I are moving from Virginia to Kansas in 2 days and my mind keeps racing with what needs to be done and with excitement of seeing my family again.
On top of this I've been seeping myself in research became this is my first child. Trying to look through the mountains of information so I can make the best decisions I can in the future. Right now I'm laying here reading about natural birth vs medicated birth and stuff like that. :)

  • Hope your little man feels better soon an hope you stay feeling well. I'm up because I am at work for 6 more hours yet... it's very slow tonight!

  • @c8lin2may‌ May I recommend a book to add to your mountains? ;) The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is more than just a book about breastfeeding. It addresses parenting concerns from newborn infancy through toddlerhood in an accessible fashion, and is a really great read. I loved it, still use it often as a resource, and give it to all my new mom friends as a shower gift. Even those who didn't breastfeed say it has been a great help to them! ;)

  • Thanks @Emerald27‌! Just now bought it on my Kindle. I'll probably be up a bit longer reading some of it. :)

@Emerald27‌ I had no idea how awesome breastfeeding is! I'm even more excited to breastfeed now! I already really like this book. Thanks again for the recommendation. :)

  • Awe I'm so sorry. I hope your little one feels better! I have a toddler who still wakes up once a night, sometimes more. Right now I think she has some teeth starting to work their way thru so she's been up a couple times a night. And DH sleeps thru anything so I'm always the one up. I can sympathize!
  • Well that was an exhausting night! I finally decided to go to sleep around 4. Told DH this morning and he offered to take a half day and come home early to watch DS so that I can nap! What a good man. :) He was upset that I had stayed awake with DS by myself and didn't ask for help.

Despite DS' terrible croupy cough and looking worse for wear, he wants to play!!! I put on some Daniel Tiger in bed and have surrounded him with toys in hopes of keeping him quiet. Is there any point in trying to keep a toddler quiet? Lol

  • What a great hubby :)  Glad you can get some sleep today and good to hear your little one is happily playing.

That's what I keep telling DH, lol. Actually I've gotten to the point where I sleep better during the day than at night, so it works better for me. Plus I can make all my appts and we'll only need part time day care while I sleep. Only downside is I don't see DH on the days I work
