Back to Back pregnancies...

Is anyone else having a baby this year after giving birth last year? How are you feeling about this?
I totally planned both of my pregnancies but today when I said out loud "I gave birth last year"...it hit me! LAST YEAR?!?!
What am I thinking? Too late now obviously, but is anyone else feeling anxious about having babies back to back? What it will do to your body or how your body will respond? How will you handle two under 2? I need someone with experience to reassure me and tell me that it's no big deal having babies 19 months apart.

Re: Back to Back pregnancies...

  • I had a baby last July and am due again in November, so ours will be 16 months apart. I'll have a repeat c-section this time (1st one was an emergency c-section). I asked my dr. this same question as we started thinking about #2 and she said there's no reason not to have them back-to-back. I had heard the 18 month rule as well and she said if you conceived easily and had a decent pregnancy with #1, there's no concern.

  • I'm having 2 under 2 for the third time, and physically, I've never had any issues with having them close together. My oldest was actually a c-section, and I had VBACs with the next two. Things definitely get kind of crazy around here with so many kids, but at least my oldest is more self-sufficient now, so that definitely helps.
  • I had my first LO last February and am due with our second in June. I definitely have a little anxiety about how I'm going to handle 2 under 2. But at the end of the day, they're my babies and I know I'll do whatever I have to do to make sure they're taken care of. Plus DH will help me out as much as possible. I'm a SAHM so I have a lot to figure out once DS2 makes his arrival.

As far as the body stuff goes, I'd talk to your dr like a pp said. My OB didn't say too much about it, so I'm assuming it's not that big of a deal.
  • There's a whole board full of those that have/had 2 under 2. That might be worth checking out. (Not that you won't get answers here, many do float between multiple boards.)

I would start stockpiling booze now, but that's me.

Tthanks for the tip... about the booze that is!
    :)

  • I had 2 under 1 (11 months apart).  It was hard the first few months, but it has gotten easier and we are now at a point where we have a good routine going.  However, I am about to have 3 under 3 so....

All that's going to shit real soon.

Be really easy on yourself and don't expect too much.  If you get to shower during the day, consider it a victory.  Take help from where ever you can get it, be good to yourself and get as much rest as you can, eat as healthy as you can, and yes, booze.  Lots of it ;)

    Good luck!

  • My DD turned 1 last month. I'm due in November so they will be 20.5 months apart. Some days I'm good and other days I panic. Like yesterday when she decided she won't sit in the grocery cart anymore. She would rather walk and touch every single glass door and package she can get to....

DD was almost 2 when DS arrived in August 2013. The hardest part has been balancing needs. It's not as difficult as I feared. Baby wearing helps & generally just choosing my battles wisely. I give a lot less fucks about small things that don't make a lot of difference later.

  • Yep! I strongly agree with PP's! Mine are 19 months apart, and they were a busy pair when they were little....now my DD is starting kindergarten and DS will go next year. We've got baby #3 on the way and we're seriously considering having a 4th with the same age gap as the first two! You'll just learn to let the little things slide (like the amount of wine you consume), have a couple of crazy years (where you realize each week you tell yourself 4pm is the same as 5pm and it's cool to pour that wine now) but once they're both potty trained, you're golden! I wouldn't change a thing.

My last two will be about 10 months apart. I am being monitored a little more and things are a tad more uncomfortable but good so far

  • I'd see what your OB says about what it will do to your body.  Pregnancy outcomes are best if mom waits at least 18 months prior to getting pregnant again, although 12 months is not too bad...  hopefully your body just recovers faster than most.

I had a baby in July and am due in October. When I asked about the 18 month "rule" she laughed.

  • Ooph. Well my girl is 14mo and Im 6 weeks along. Im not ready for this as I have major exams and a house to build and I want to walk around with out a baby on my tits and soooo much more but its not happening. I still enjoy a very small glass of red wine now and then, or white, i take a sip or two of my hubbies beer but I honestly don't want to go another 1.5 years without a glass of red wine now and then with dinner. My daughter is crazy busy so I am nervous about the exhaustion of the first weeks and caring for her. It doesn't help that my hubby is gone half the year at sea. We will suck it up and be fine. I wish I had more Norwegian blood in me, those women are tough! Lol I admire all you tough moms out there, I wish I was better at this.
  • I gave birth to my first baby January 2013 and will be having #2 in November 2014.  So although its closer to two years, it was JUST last year that I went through all this!  Kinda crazy when you think of it that way, but I wanted my kids to be 2 years apart (if possible).

  • My kiddos will be 20 months apart. I had DS January 2013 and this new one is due September 2014. I have a few 'holy heck! what did I do!?' moments, but they are few and far between.... I might be crazy though.

I WILL say, being pregnant with a toddler that can run around but not talk yet and does not STTN in his own bed yet is....a challenge.

The 2U2 board is worth checking out.
  • My first two were about 20 months apart. It was great actually :)
This next one is a little more spaced out but honestly I would have been fine had they ended up closer. Lots of people have 2u2, there will be ups and downs but now at 2 and 3 my older two are best buds :)

  • I will be in the same boat as my DD is only 15 months today. I got lucky with my first she slept through the night at 2mo, eats anything I give her (loves veggies) and is in a really good mood all the time. I'm convinced this one is going to try to kill me because I had it too easy with my first! Sh*t is about to get real! Bring on the booze!

I have had 2 under 2 and come July will have 3 under 4. Honestly, I don't think it is that bad. Everyone is different, though. My body has done okay so far (though this pregnancy has been a bit more difficult). As far as managing the kids, you get the hang of it eventually. Some days I want to pull out all of my hair and rock in the corner and others are pretty simple.

Honestly, the hardest part for me has been the stupid comments from other people. When you are pregnant for the 3rd time in less than 4 years people tend to say really idiotic things. Often.
  • My last two will be about 10 months apart. I am being monitored a little more and things are a tad more uncomfortable but good so far
10 months apart? You got pregnant when your first wasn't more than a couple weeks old?? Damn

Yep, not planned that way. In fact I was about to get my tubes tied. It will be closer to 11 months but doc is gonna take her a few weeks early.
