NTTGPR: House cleaning

How do you keep your home clean? Do you have a special day you clean? Have you changed your cleaning products for healthier, less harsh cleaning products in prep for baby or to be healthier?  I'm curious because DH and I suck at cleaning house! (mostly me as he's only home 6 months out of the year)

  • I would like to hire a cleaning lady. I haven't switched to anything, honestly I find that straight up bleach is the best thing ever for toilets, I just keep the windows open to air it out. I do love Dr. Bonner's soap for floors though, makes my house smell minty.

I try to clean during the week when I'm home so that we can have fun on the weekends. H grew up in a house that's thisclose to an episode of Hoarders, so we occasionally go through some stuff he's accumulated to see if he really needs it.

  • I had a cleaning lady growing up and it was AWESOME.  I plan to do this again when we move into a bigger home, but it seems a little silly in our little two-bedroom.

We have no system now, and our house has been a mess for a long time.  We're in the process of trying to figure out what works for us. My schedule varies too much, I can't pick one day a week and sometimes I have long stretches where I work a bajillion hours and I really can't do anything at home.  We got a whiteboard calendar and we're dividing up the chores and writing them down for specific days that work with our schedule for any given week.  We just got started and it's ok so far, but we'll have to see if it works!

I can't imagine anything worse than cleaning everyday (besides wiping down the counters). My version of hell would involve a different cleaning chore every day. Now, I work a shit ton of hours. Maybe if I didn't, I would feel differently. But probably not.
I live in your hell :)

I do not "work", so to speak...so technically..this is my job.  I try to stay busy *most* days...I find cleaning therapeutic, and I enjoy it. (I'm so weird/crazy, I know)

ETA: I feel so much better when my house is clean, the rest of my life seems to fall into place. Otherwise, I fall to pieces.
I wish I did. When she can't sleep, my mom goes into her basement and irons. I wish I had that kind of tick about stuff like that.

  • @NachoBelley‌ , I have a friend like that. She loves cleaning. I can just think of literally a million other things I'd rather be doing!

We clean (bathrooms, vacuuming) before people come over. And I make sure to invite people over every 2-3 weeks to keep me honest. Everything stays relatively clean in the interim.

  • In my fantasy world, I follow flylady.net.  In real life, I don't.  I try to keep on her cleaning schedule but with my crazy hours, I sometimes miss weeks.  My stretch of shifts at work starts today, so I got a bunch of stuff done.  Groceries, cleaned up office and kitchen, did all the laundry.  I wish I could hire a cleaning lady for the deep cleaning stuff but I can't bring myself to spend the extra money.

  • I work between 40-60 hours a week but can't stand the house to be dirty.

Cleaning is broken down into the following routine: light cleaning during the work days (kitchen/dishes, laundry, vacuuming, and keeping things put away) and deep cleaning every weekend (washing bedding, washing dog toys, wiping down every item on every shelf/surface with a cloth and spray, cleaning the doors, window sills, baseboards, fingerprints on walls/light switches, more vacuuming, wiping down all the leather furniture, cleaning appliances, etc). H helps by cleaning the bathrooms.

I like to use cleaners that don't have harsh chemicals so we use Meyers and really like their products.
  • DH and I have a standing division of Labor. I clean everything in the Kitchen, Living Room and Bedroom. DH Mops up the whole house, and cleans the Bathroom. it helps that our house is tiny so we can clean up quickly everyday. We also do a deeper clean on weekends where we dust appliances, window panes etc.

i love you, my little mooncake mahal kita

  • I'm sort of anal, and have a "chart" i go by.  Each day is a bigger chore.. (dust on Monday, clean the fridge out on Tuesday, wash bed sheets on Wednesday, etc) and every day I do the little things (wash down counters after cooking, pick up, etc).  I'm home a lot during the day, I work part-time and usually work more towards afternoon/evening and weekends so I have time to clean.

That said, my house is definitely not perfect.  I have a serious organization issue and have stupid piles all over my house and I can never find mail or important things.

  • On a daily basis I clean up after the cats, do the dishes, make our bed. On a weekly basis I do laundry (I usually do laundry anywhere between 1-4 times a week), vacuum, dust. About once a month we do a "deep clean" where we swiffer the bathroom, kitchen and dining room floors.

I absolutely HATE cleaning the bathroom. I gag the entire time. So I really don't clean it. MH will clean it and he does a great job :)

  • I didn't realize people clean baseboards. What goes into cleaning baseboards?
  • @NachoBelley‌ If you ever need some more therapeutic cleaning time, you're welcome to come over. :)
I'm a SAHM and I still live in mess. It's mostly just messy and cluttered, not dirty. Except for the dog hair. Oh sweet baby Jesus, there is so much dog hair!

I take a duster to mine once a week, or they'll get cobwebs. Maybe not in the winter as much- in the summer, they can/do.

  • When I worked I had a maid now I just can't justify it but my maid only did the heavy cleaning. I still kept up with everything daily. I've always been kinda anal about my house.

I don't have specific days that things have to be cleaned. I clean the kitchen daily and wash fold clothes almost daily. Everyone has baskets in my laundry room that I put their folded clothes in and I have a bar to hang the clothes in my laundry room. I fold the clothes straight out of the dryer. I do bathrooms weekly and dust mop the wood floors every couple of days. Sheets get done about every week and 1/2. I dust every 1-2 weeks but I've found since I wax all my furniture I don't have to dust as often. Every 2 weeks I vacuum and clean baseboards. I only do the heavy cleaning fans and light fixtures 2-3 times a year.

    Fucking bump!!!!

  • I have hired a cleaning lady once, but mainly I clean on Wednesday nights, and early Sunday morning. H is not a bathroom cleaner so that is my department, well now that I think about it he is not a good cleaner at all. I am teaching the boys to pick up after themselves.
  • We have a cleaning crew that comes every other week.  I love it because not only do I not have to do the cleaning, every two weeks we have to pick up so that they can clean - so things don't get cluttered up.

Dishes are done immediately after use on a daily basis and I'll Swiffer Wet-Jet the kitchen floor if it gets too dirty (in the winter we come in through there and snow and yuck gets all over it).

DH does most of the laundry - I'll help once in a while but he does most of it.

Then a couple of times a year, we'll do some big projects - like this weekend I plan on washing the curtains and washing the windows as I'll have my in-laws over for Easter.

Omg just mentioning that website has changed my day!  I just signed up for her emails.  I used to do chores religiously, then I started shipping out android 4 years someone else cleaned my room, made dinner, did my laundry and I've rebelled and then got overwhelmed and don't know how to get that control back! So thank you!
