Question for anyone that knows photography! I would love to splurge and buy a nice camera in anticipation of our little one arriving. I can only imagine how many pictures we will be taking :)  I keep hearing about the Canon Rebel T3 vs. T3i....Does anyone have any experience with either one? Any suggestions as to which one I should get? I appreciate any insight!

Re: Camera question- any suggestions?

  • I have the Canon T2i and I love it. I don't know the differences of the two you listed to give feedback. I would do a comparison of features and keep in mind what is important to you and how you will be using it. Good luck!

  • Thanks! I will have to check out the Canon T2i!
  • I am pretty sure the Canon T3i is very similar, maybe just the newer version.

I agree with ashtog. The t3 is a great starter camera. Just learn how to use it- no sense investing in a nice camera and keeping it on auto.
  • I'm a tog as well. And I couldn't agree more with what Ashtog has said. I also have to give my vote for the canon rebel t3i if this is your first dslr and invest in a prime lens like the 50mm 1.8. You can get that lens for around $100. its a FANTASTIC investment. The kit lens is usually crap and they don't give you a very good picture. I started out with a rebel and 50mm 1.8 as well. They are great started cameras. I outgrew it for what i was needing it for and upgraded to pro equipment. I also highly suggest researching how to shoot in manual. And practice, practice and practice some more :) Shooting in auto NEVER gave me the results I was looking for when I first got a dslr. Practice makes perfect. You'll have a blast capturing memories. I have my camera out on a daily basis. I'm a little obsessed with DS.
  • I have a NEX 7 it is amazing! It's kind of pricy but totally worth it, with moving kids! My DH has got some amazing photos of my Niece and nephews while they are moving. I did a lot of research and do not regret my choice in camera.

We have a T3i and it's great.  The difference between the T3i and the T2i (earlier model) is that the T3i has a flip out view screen, which is super handy.

There's also a T4i and a T5i, which is the most recent model year.

We have the T3i. I don't know much about the camera. DH plays with it the most. But the one difference I know between the 3 and 3i is that the screen flips. I think that alone is worth getting the 3i, if those are the only 2 you're considering. Because with the 3 if you leave it around your neck your clothes (buttons, zipper, etc) can scratch up the screen, where as the 3i the screen can flip in and be protected.

  • We started with the Rebel XSi, which came before the T series. It was a great way to start with DSLRs. I think the T3 or T3i would be a good choice.

We haven't really had issues with our kit lenses but DH did get the 50 mm f1.8 lens for Christmas, so we're looking forward to seeing how those pictures turn out. We've been waiting for the weather to get nicer so that we can get outside with the camera. Would be nice to practice before baby comes!

I'm in the market for a new camera too, so I had bookmarked this previous discussion.  I'm sharing because a lot of good info was shared in this thread too.  Thanks to everyone that shared their tips!

  • I have the T3 it is a nice camera. It depends on how much experience you have and how much you want to learn. If you are just going to leave it on auto settings then I would say go with a cheaper point and shoot but if you are willing to learn then go for a nice one.

I would also go into the store and play around with the ones you like. See how easy it is to change settings and how it feels when you use it. I had one picked out that I wanted but it just felt awkward in my hands so I knew I would not use it as much.
  • I really wanted a nice camera and ended up going with a really nice point and shoot. Personally, I know that I am not a pro and never will be. I have taken a lot of pictures this past Christmas and they turned out great, also did a mini photo session with my friends baby and I think they look great.

  • You can never go wrong with a Canon. Great cameras.
