Domperidone?

I've been EPing for my triplet boys for 3 weeks.  They are still in NICU.  Just this morning, they ran out of BM.  They are taking in about 34 oz/day and I'm pumping about 22 oz/day.  I pump every 3 hours during the day and wake up 1-2 times during the night to pump.  Each 20-30 minute pump, i get 1.75-3.25 oz.  6 days ago, I starting taking Fenugreek and may produce 1-2 oz more each day...basically, an unnoticeable difference.
Wondering about domperidone.  I've read missed reviews.  I plan to EP until they are home from NICU, then switch to formula.  It would just be too much between them and my 17 mo old daughter.  Besides, they have wonderful formulas that my DD (a late term preemie) THRIVED on from 6 wks old!  Anyone have experience with getting and taking this?
Thanks!

What exactly are you wondering about it? My DD was born in May and I started taking it in July after trying fenugreek & blessed thistle plus eating oatmeal & drinking a little beer. My LC recommended I take it. I still don't know if it worked for me. I stopped pumping and breast fed her using a supplemental nursing system (still using it). My supply went up slightly (we did weighted feeds) but I also took a bunch of other herbs (goat's rue, malunggay, and shatavari). I took domperidone from July-a couple weeks ago. The only side effect for me was constipation. No side effects for DD. I'm not sure if its really worth it for you to stress over the amount of milk you're getting though. I doubt the domperidone will help you gain 12oz a day, maybe 3-4oz. It's not so bad for them to get a little formula every day, especially since you'll be switching them to formula when they get home. Maybe it'll be good for their tummies to be used to it. Couple of ideas though to pump more: pump more frequently (every 2-2.5hrs), try power pumping once a day (15 mins on, 10 mins off for an hour), and make sure you're eating & drinking enough. I don't mean for this to be snarky at all, but I just think it might be more stress that you don't need to try to increase your supply and then stop pumping. I think it'd be uncomfortable for you to establish an oversupply and then stop. And no judgment for switching to formula, I can't even imagine caring for 4 children and pumping! Best of luck to your boys & hope you have an easy NICU stay.

  • I took the max dose of domperidone for a month after my trio were born, my OB prescribed it. My milk was slow to come in and it kickstarted my production. I was able to get up to pumping enough for my three and then some to build a large freezer stash. I doubt it was all due to the domperidone but I definitely believe it help get me off to a great start. I had no side effects.

I agree with pp though, if you're planning on switching to formula at home, it is probably a good idea to get them used to it before they are discharged. Good luck!

  • It works for me! I've been pumping for 9 mo now, since day one. My supply tanked after we came home and my OB prescribed it at my 6 week pp checkup. I notice when I take only one a day or skip days my supply dips crazily and I can barely keep up with demand, especially since I have to have enough on hand to send bottles to daycare. I've always been a bit of a super producer, though. When my supply is in full force, I can get between 10-16 oz in one session (from both breasts) every 6 hours. When my supply is low, I get as little as 4-6 oz combined, which is not enough for LO. Domperidone is the only thing keeping my supply strong enough to still give her breast milk, and for that I am thankful. I've gone through probably 3 or 4 ebb and flow cycles when I wean a little from dom and my milk slows. I take it 2-3 times a day again and my milk comes back. Once I even out I try to keep up with taking it twice per day. No side effects for me either. Worth every penny, in my situation.
