Gestational Diabetes question...

The earlier post got me to thinking... what are some symptoms of GD? I researched it, and it stated: gaining excessive weight, excessive hunger or thirst, excessive urination, or recurrent vaginal infections. But the poster below stated that she hadn't gained any weight and had actually lost some.... I'm confused. Please help! TIA!

Re: Gestational Diabetes question...

  • Bearkat, I posted about weight loss because I'm not necessarily GD -- I am flat-out diabetic. Not pregnancy related.

Was dx with PCOS/insulin resistance years ago and have had to watch my sugar forever ... but since I had to stop the metformin after I got pregnant, my body is out of whack again.

Read: I'm not GD, I'm regular diabetic. My docs were just a little slow on the uptake. Yes

  • When I had it with DD I had NO symptoms.

I mean I could have had excessive thirst - but I chalked it up to being pg.  Nothing that was too crazy!

Ah hah! I see. Thanks! :)

  • This has less to do about GD and a lot more to do with saying HI to Bearkat!!  :)

  • I wouldn't go by the symptoms. I don't have GD as of right now, I'm currently at the 3 hr test. This will only add to your confustion: I am 5'7 weigh 122lbs, not overweight at all. I also do not have increase in urination or any significant change in my hunger or thirst. No recurrent vaginal infections, no family hx. So, I am hoping that I don't have GD but it appears from my past high glucose tests this may be my reality.

  • also, all those symptoms seem really relevant to pregnancy in general to me!  I don't think i would notice any changes in them!

I'm curious why you had to stop Met when you got pregnant.  I am on it specifically to reduce the chance of m/c (and the possibility of PCOS, although I don't think I have it).  I will take it until 20 weeks, but I believe you can take it longer if need be.  Just wondering why your doc had you stop...

  • I have GD, and didn't specifically have any of those symptoms worse than any other pregnant woman would (we all pee a lot).

Before I was diagnosed, I hadn't gained any weight, but since being diagnosed, I've lost a lot (I'm sure because of the modified diet and exercise).

  • I've read that most people diagnosed with GD actually show no symptoms at all except for high glucose in urine at routine doc appts and of course the positive GD test.?

You know, I'm not really sure why my RE and regular endo. had me stop taking it -- but I trusted them, they are docs!! I believe I remember them telling me Metformin significantly increased the risks of birth defects, and since I didn't have a prior history of miscarriage, we'd try without it?

I had actually stopped taking it pretty early on, even before I went on the Clomid, I think. My body didn't react well to Metformin for a LONG time (years!) and they were afraid mixing it with Clomid might have made my explode out both ends, to put it mildly.

I haven't had any troubles since being pregnant ... but I was afraid everything would progress to full-blown diabetes before all was said and done. Meh. I was right.

I am wondering if they will put me back on now?

you should call your doctor and ask

  • I have GD.  There aren't any real symptoms that you would say to yourself,  I think i have GD.  The symptoms that you mentioned may be true, but they aren't  different from what one's pregnancy symptoms might be.  And if diabetes runs in your family they you are more at risk of getting it, but it doesn't mean you will. I don't think there is any real way of preventing getting it if you are going to get it except perhaps eating a well balanced meal low in carbs (not no carbs) and low in sugar and high in protein and veggies as that would be your diet if you were to get GD.  And from my understanding... it's all in your hormones and how you break down sugars/glucose is going to determine whether or not you will have GD.
