Talk to me about schools

So yeah I'm thinking about schools for LO when shes 2 months old BUT I have a reason. When DH comes home from work in May we are moving back to my home town in TN. The houses we have found (renting) aren't in the school district that I really want her to go to. So is it easy for me to get her to another school? Does it depend on the schools themselves. I have no idea how this is done and all the articles Ive read are just confusing me so .... Im seeking the knowledge of F14.

  • Sending a kid to a school outside of the one you're "supposed" to use is going to vary by state and district.

You could rent for three or four years and then move.

  • I would plan on living in the district you want her to go to by the time you are enrolling for kindergarten. Policies for out of district kids vary by district and could change based on how crowded schools already are. I wouldn't depend on it. .

This. Where I live each district decides if they allow open enrollment.

  • Okay, I don't know if we will still be renting the same place but just thinking ahead. Hopefully we will save up enough to buy a house, due to DH's citizenship and job we have to be able to put 30% down on a house and right now thats not do-able.

You could apply for a waiver, but many schools (especially the ones with the higher ratings) get "red flagged" which means that they are over populated for their own zone.  I teach at one of these schools and I may not be able to bring my DD/DS to school with me because of it.  I taught in TN 10 years ago and I found overcrowding to be a problem in the better public schools.

  • Try talking to a realtor about the options in that area. It was our agent that told me about GAs "school choice" law that allows you to send your kid to any school in your county that has availability... But you must provide transportation. It's b/c in GA, some counties have AMAZING schools but also have some seriously CRAPTASTIC schools. You pay the same taxes but get a very different experience. This allows another option besides moving or private school. I'm not sure, but TN may have similar laws as well.

  • Ill definitely ask! Thanks! It is a long way off but if I can avoid having to move again in the future I will but I also want LO to go to the best school possible and in the area there are either GREAT schools or just schools that are really terrible!

  • Oh and find out about public charter schools as well. DS goes to a charter and we are super pleased.
