Pacifier Use

My LO is 8 weeks old and she wakes up pretty frequently at night fussing. Usually I try to give her the pacifier to see if she'll fall back asleep before getting up to feed her. I feel like she would not go back to sleep if she was really hungry. What are your opinions on this? Do you feed every time your LO wakes up or do you try comforting/pacifier first? Last night she woke up when it had been 2.5 hours since she ate. I gave her the pacifier and she slept for another 2 hours.

Re: Pacifier Use

  • I try everything before we get up at night -- paci, rocking bassinet, bassinet vibrator, etc. If all else fails, I get up. Although, I also know what time he's most likely to want to eat, so if he's fussy between 2 and 3, I usually just get up.

  • We do what you do, OP. LO has a fairly predictable schedule with nursing around 3 and again around 6:30. If she wakes up other than those times, DH gets up and tries soothing with a pacifier. If she won't go back to sleep after 1-2 tries, I feed her, regardless of the time.

Last night, we had a similar situation where she woke at 2am, went back to sleep easily (didn't even need/want the paci), and slept until 3:30am, when I fed her.

Thanks for the response! I'm torn between feeling guilty for using the pacifier and feeling like she wouldn't fall back asleep if she was truly hungry. I also try 1 or 2 times and if she doesn't fall back asleep I feed her, even if only a short time has passed. I find too that she doesn't eat as well or as long if it's only been a couple hours.
  • @RosiePeare‌ she has her 2 month appointment next Thursday. I can't wait to go so I can get this question answered! I suspect he will say to try the pacifier first because he says to do that during the day if it's been less than 2 hours since a feeding. Unfortunately my daughter hasn't really developed much of a pattern yet so it's hard for me to tell. And she's never been very good about feeding cues. She always acts like she wants to suck and she uses her pacifier a lot. During the day, she almost always goes 3 hours without wanting to eat, sometimes 4 if she happens to be napping at the 3 hour mark. I feel like I'm doing the right thing by offering the pacifier first because she'll spit it out and cry when she's hungry. But of course I'm going to second guess myself until we see the doctor! 10 more days!
