Stomach bug

I started throwing up at 3:30 this morning and feel awful. I've read that the best things to do are keep BF and stay hydrated (which is really hard to do right now). Has anyone gone through this while BF and had any other advice, like best foods or drinks? I'm guessing it's best to just stick with water or Gatorade, but I'm hoping someone had a miracle trick!

Re: Stomach bug

  • I had it last week. I drank power aide, ginger ale & tea with a little sugar. Try to sleep as much as possible. I was told to keep putting fluids in even if they aren't staying in. My supply dropped a bit but I just continued nursing more frequently although it was visible that LO was frustrated, I knew there was still milk it just wasn't flowing as fast as normal. Feel better!

  • Thanks ladies. I fed DD in bed and haven't gotten out of bed since then. I'm feeling a little better than I few hours ago and keeping up with fluids.

  • Yup, just getting over it today with a day off from work and DD at the sitter's so I can really rest.

Water, Popsicles, saltine crackers, and soup have saved me over the last 24 hours. I nursed DD as much as possible yesterday and she woke up frequently during the night to eat, too. Stay as hydrated as possible and eat as many calories as you can keep down.

  • Did you LOs get sick too?

  • It's been about 36 hours since I first got sick and DD hasn't shown any signs of vomiting or a sick tummy.  She did spit up a few times during the day before I got sick, though, which is strange for her.  I'm hoping the antibodies in the breast milk will prevent her from getting sick.

  • Mine did about 56 hours after I did although we thought I had food poisoning so we weren't as careful with preventing spreading germs than we should've been.

we are just getting over it- UGH! this is my third time having it while nursing DS. the first time, my DH and i had it, but DS never got it. the 2nd two times, we actually got it from him. :S

seconding what everyone else said- i would start with water, then move on to gatorade or non-diet soda with caffeine (like regular coke or pepsi), then on to applesauce, yogurt, or crackers. don't chug a whole bunch of water while you're still vomiting- just take small sips. once the vomiting has subsided some, then start drinking more. stay in bed!!

when you're better, make sure you disinfect bathrooms, doorknobs, etc. the virus that causes it is extremely tough. use a 10% bleach solution (90% water, 10% bleach in a bucket- use gloves and a rag and crack the windows).

    hang in there!
  • Thanks everyone! I've been able to stay out of the bathroom for a while now, I just feel like my head is going to explode. A friend of mine was with me Saturday night and she got this too. She went to the doctors and they told her about this nuravirus going around that is highly contagious. I sure hope DD doesn't get this.

  • I had the bug last week and it was very difficult to keep anything down, even water. I didn't really eat all day and finally around 8 that night I ate some saltine crackers and drank some Gatorade. I didn't get sick again. Also, the next day my daughter wanted to eat about every 2 hours which helped with my supply tremendously. Breastfed babies are sooo smart! :D I am amazed everyday by it & so glad I didn't give up! Hope you feel better soon!!
