Pulling hair out

Hi - our daughter (just turned 2) has been playing with her hair when going to bed or in for a nap. It seems like now she has been actually pulling her hair out as we've noticed a small almost-bald patch on her head.

Anyone ever deal with this? We put her to bed tonight wearing a little hat and that seems to be working - she hasn't pulled it off yet but that is probably just a matter of time. One suggestion we found online was shaving her head but that seems drastic and I'm hoping it doesn't come to that!

Thanks!

Re: Pulling hair out

  • DD started doing this when she was around 1. If I remember correctly the advice I found was to ignore it. And to address triggers, like stress. She did it at bedtime. She stopped after a very short while, just a few weeks. I guess if you see it continue, you could ask your pedi about it.

  • Right around 2.5 or so my DD started twirling her hair and sucking her fingers to put herself to sleep.  It was kind of out of nowhere as she had never taken to a pacifier or sucked her thumb or anything.  She did not pull out her hair but twirl it into knots and then when I'd brush her hair she'd cry and big chunks would come out.

What I started doing is braiding her hair into as tight of braids as I could before she went to sleep.  I'd do two or three so I could them tight as possible.  She would still play with her hair but couldn't get to it quite the same way.  This went on for a month or so before I was finally able to put her down without the braids.  She still plays with her hair now but not to the extent of doing damage.  Ignoring it did not help us because the knots were so bad that brushing her hair was a nightmare.  Good luck.
