BF baby won't take a bottle still...

DS is 8 weeks old today and still won't take a bottle or pacifier. We've tried latex nipples and 6 different pacifiers.

We've tried playtex drop in bottles and the medela ones. He will be starting daycare in 3 1/2 weeks. I've tried to go out of sight, out of the room. DH is home 1.5 days a week so it has been hard. I've had my mom and in laws try but he just spits it out and will not suck or leave it in his mouth.

Dr said to just keep trying different bottles. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: BF baby won't take a bottle still...

  • The nuk bottles have nipples that are shaped more like a breast maybe you could try it
  • Loading the player...
  • My baby had the same problem but now he is taking the Avent bottles and pacifiers.

  • You need to LEAVE THE HOUSE. He can smell you and honestly, you won't be able to ignore his cries (I couldn't) long enough for him to decide to take it. Leave DH and MIL so they can support each other and you go see a movie, get a pedi, go shopping... But stay away for a few HOURS. He will figure it out but it's going to be hard and it won't happen with you there.

So sorry, this must be frustrating. I recently made the switch from bf to ff and my LO loves the Playtex VentAire bottles. They limit the air LO takes in and spits up a little less with them which is a bonus. I've also read from a lot of the moms here that Dr Browns bottles work well for them. Good luck!
  • Playtex ventaire and drop ins use the same nipple so changing the bottle won't make much difference. Playtex does sell a variety pack though with different shapes- at target. May be worth a shot. Try Avents- natural is supposed to be the better one for BF babies but mine seems to like classic better.

  • I've used the tommee tippee bottles and Medea, but my kids have not been picky when it comes to bottles (we have boob issues instead). I know friends whose babies did not take a bottle easily and had luck with tommee tippee. Also, I would second the advice of leaving the house if you can so LO doesn't smell you. Good luck!

  • That's what's in the variety pack... I think? Different shaped nipples. But the bottles themselves really didn't change. I just bought one with the new packaging and one of our old rings fits it.

  • We had trouble with this too. We ended buying comotomo bottles from amazon that he will take. They are pricier but work.  Seem to be more breast shape which I think is helping.

  • Dr. Brown makes a wide neck one too with a slow flow nipple.  GL!!

No but I'm pretty sure the "nursers" use a different nipple? It's their newest product?

Yes, the drop-ins themselves aren't what worked for our baby - they were the nurser with the brown latex nipple: https://www.amazon.com/Playtex-Drop-Ins-NaturaLatch-Latex-Nipple/dp/B0009XAHZQ

  • Also wanted to add that daycare can sometimes do miraculous things for babies who refuse the bottle. My friend struggled significantly with this -- to this day, the baby refuses a bottle from her mom or dad, but will take on while at at daycare. It took a few days of practice (and patience!) but her kid eventually caught on that daycare = bottles.

In the meantime, I agree with PP's that you need to leave the house for a bit, and keep trying different bottles!

    Good luck

  • DD would take Dr Browns bottles no problem when I was still BF. she also hates the Nuk binkies but loves the MAM's.

if it makes you feel any better, I used to nanny for a family and when the mom went back to work, the baby still wouldn't take a bottle because she still BF at home. she had pumped and he would scream when he got the bottle but I didn't give up and eventually he got tired/hungry enough to where he would take it. it wasn't fun but after a few days of this, he finally would take the bottle no problem. (they also used Dr Browns.)

I've never ever heard of a baby not being able to attend daycare because they wouldn't take a bottle. ****Eventually they get hungry enough and figure it out I think? ****I wish you luck! The medela ones sucked for us but the playtex nursers worked well, not sure if you were trying the playtex ventairs?

Not always my dd seriously would just go w/out N cry til I returned... I only worked occasionally Friday nights for 4-8 hours and made sure to nurse her right before I left. My boys didn't care what shApe, color, size or brand. Although my DS3 actually switched his schedule to mine. He would take only one feeding at daycare (should have only been taking one night feeding) and then would eat allllllllllll night long. I put a pic of him in the random ass shit post in my homemade moby-he def wasent going hungry lol

For your sake pp I hope you find something that your LO likes.. Trial N error ;)

Eta: dd took a sippy cup no problem! She is a special snowflake
