hi ladies,
I'm 27wk5d with twins (boy/girl), and am having a rough couple of weeks. We just got upgraded to a high risk pregnancy, due to some u/s findings a week ago. Background - at our anatomy scan in January, everything looked great for both babies, but they saw an EIF on baby girl's left ventricle, which by itself isn't anything to be concerned about. Our NT scan came back normal during 1st tri, and our bloodwork came back with a 1 in 4,000 risk of Down syndrome.
Fast forward to a week ago, at a regular u/s appt., the OB noticed a brightness in baby girl's bowels (echogenic bowel), which could be an indication of any number of issues, and raises our risk of Down syndrome to 1 in 100.
Last Friday - we went for an u/s with the high risk OB at the hospital (basically, they did a second full anatomy scan on both babies), and are now on information overload. Not only do they still see both soft markers in baby girl, they also saw echogenic bowels in baby boy, as well as a larger-then-normal space in baby boy's brain stem (supposed to be 10 mm or less - his is 12 mm). So they took a lot of my blood to run virus screening tests and to do the Harmony test. That by itself would be a lot to deal with, but now they also saw that baby girl's umbilical cord is attached to the very edge of her placenta (not in the center, which is normal), and she's not growing as expected. She's always been on the small side, but still within normal ranges, so my OB hasn't been too concerned, other than to say that they would continue to monitor her growth to make sure she is still growing. Now though, she remains at the 23rd percentile, but her belly is measuring only 7th percentile, and the high risk OB indicated that most likely her placenta will have issues, that she fully expects baby girl to drop below the 10th percentile at some point, and they'll have to deliver much sooner than planned. We were told that even though the blood flow studies they did last Friday came back within normal range (just barely though), they expect baby girl's growth to taper off over the coming weeks, and once she either stops growing entirely or the blood flow from her placenta is reduced (or reverses), then they'll have to deliver. Very scary stuff. The OB seemed to be hopeful that we would make it past our next u/s in 2 weeks, but couldn't guarantee how much longer beyond that - it will all depend on how baby girl is doing at that point.
So, now we wait until April 11th, when we'll get results from all the blood tests (and have a better idea of what we should be worried about/preparing for), and see how baby girl is growing. Just too much to try not to worry about in the meantime!
