3rd Trimester

Pertussis Shot?

We were going to get ours this weekend, but I don't hear this mentioned a lot.

Did you get them? Did your family? Our OB said both sets of our parents should get them as well since they will all be around baby girl the most.

Just curious if anyone else got these or had to ask family members to do so?

I got the Tdap shot at my 29 week appointment!  Currently working on getting SO to go get one too.  He hates going to the doctor.

  • Yeah the OB said she couldn't do it in her office or even the Lab across the hall I had gone to for some other stuff. She recommended a Walgreen's actually! (I don't have a PCP I always saw specialists but I need to get one ASAP!) So, I guess we will try Walgreens or CVS maybe?

My hubby is the same way but we figured we can get it done together.

My mom is 65 and her and dad just retired, they said their docs told them they actually tend to offer it by standard to people 65+.

  • Absolutely we got the shot. It would be irresponsible not to.
  • Just to be clear I was not ever planning on not getting it, but was curious if others had since I hadn't heard much about it. I figured this was standard.

Did anyone have the experience of asking family to also get it? We already asked ours too, and they said they would, but I feel like I have to keep giving gentle reminders lol :)

  • My dh and I both got it, plus my parents, my ILs and my SIL and her bf. If someone wanted to come to the hospital or see is in the first few months, they had to get it

  • Got mine yesterday.  Our kids and DH are up to date.
  • I got one at 29 weeks from my PCP because the OB was out. My husband got his at his physical a few weeks before that, and my mom also got hers. Anyone who is going to spend a significant amount of time with the baby should have it!
  • Got it two weeks ago. Good point I didn't think of hubby. Will talk to Dr.

  • DH is military so he of course had already gotten it, I had mine at 28 weeks or so.

In addition anyone who wants to visit us in the first 8 weeks has to get it.

  • My LO is 18 months old, and in just that short time the standard has change to advise all women to repeat during each pregnancy. They believe now that if you receive it while pregnant, the baby develops some of their own immunity before birth! Pretty interesting! With DS I didn't have it because I had received it four years earlier and that was still within the appropriate timeframe per the old standard.

  • Both DH and I are getting it at my appointment on the 22nd. My MW didn't mention our families getting the vaccine, but I will be sure to ask about that.

  • Yes, I got it at 32 weeks. Husband had the booster a couple years ago. SIL and BIL just got theirs because they had a baby in October. My in-laws were a hard sell, but they agreed to the shot after they finally understood how important it was.

  • DH got his along with the flu at one of my prenatal appointments around 24 weeks. I got mine about 31 weeks. DH was pretty stoked about getting it for free at the prenatal because he was due for tetanus anyway (he's a mechanic so it's important for him).
  • We got them before we went to India almost 4 years ago. I will get it again at my next check up. My parents have gotten it, but only because my SIL who is due 2 months before has insisted that anyone who wants to see her new baby before the baby gets the shot must not only get it themselves, but also provide her proof if it. Extreme. I'm just taking people's word for it.
  • I got it. Had a nasty reaction to it. (gastrointestinal grossness for 24 hours, muscle pain in the arm for 14 days). Didn't happen when I got it during my last pregnancy (2 years ago).

It never crossed my mind to ask anyone else to get it. That seems pretty stupid, now that I think about it. I know my parents and they won't do it (they also refuse to wear seat belts because it is, in their words, "statistically impossible to die in a car crash." No joke.) But I should probably get my husband to do it. Wonder why my OB didn't suggest it.

Omg no seatbelts. Have they Not seen accidents and people thrown from the car? Plus it isa law to wear seatbelts. They don't care about that?

Thank you for bringing this up.  I called my PCP and was told I need to get it down at my OB's office.  I will call them Monday to see if I can get it done at my next appointment on the 15th.  I'll be 32w5d.  My midwife didn't mention anything to me about it last Tuesday.

  • dragonfly, don't even get me started ... at any rate, they don't live in town and will probably not see the baby very often, so I'm not going to stress about the vaccine. And they at least see the benefit of car seats.

It's not statistically impossible to die from not having a car seat?  :)  I do not think "statistically impossible" means what they think it means...  :(

  • I asked about it at my appointment this morning. My OB doesn't do it so I'm going to Walgreens to get it done.
  • I too got mine from Walgreens. Just wanted to mention that some insurance only covers the vaccination if you go to the clinic portion of Walgreens, not just the pharmacy. Mine would have been $69 if I got it from the pharmacy, but it was free when I went to the clinic next to the pharmacy.

  • We have friends staying with us for Easter and they were both happy to get the shot in case LO arrives early. It was way less awkward of a conversation than I was expecting.

  • I got mine.  DH got his.  Both our sets of parents got theirs.  LO will be going to work with me for a few weeks, so I even went so far as to ask my staff to get the booster (although I didn't require it- I just asked them as a personal favor).
  • I work on an inpatient Pediatrics unit, so I had it, DH got his when we found out I was pregnant.  I asked my mom to get hers, she did.  I asked my MIL and uncle-in-law to get it as well since they will be around baby often as well - not sure if they did or not, but they won't be around baby without it!  FIL won't be around the baby.  Even a few of my friends got the booster.  I'm really paranoid about that and getting the flu shot.  All family got that vaccine.

  • I got one at 29 weeks, from a local pharmacy. I will have DH go to Walgreen's, and my LO has already taken it. I think we're covered!

  • I got mine during the third trimester and I was a nutcase about the rest of my family getting one too!
