Breastfeeding

C Section causing breastfeeding complications

Hello!

With my son, I was induced and ended up being in labor for 30 hours before they ended up doing a Csection. After this, my son and I never developed a good nursing relationship. I had low supply for 7 months and I finally decided enough is enough. I am thinking due to my labor and Csection.

I was shooting for vbac this time but they are saying this baby is 30% bigger and I may not have much choice in the matter.

Now I may be trying a different doctor but in case I have to have another c section, someone PLEASE tell me I can nurse normally this time without complications. I am so worried that it will be just as stressful and impossible to get a good supply and nursing relationship.

  • You can do it! Seek the help of the LC at the hospital right away. Try and nurse as much as you can (every 2 hours) to establish a good supply the first few weeks of life. Lots of water and food to fuel your body.

I had 2 c sections and nursed well past 1yr for both.

  • I've had two csections and never had an issue. With my emergency csection I had preE and was on drugs so I wasn't able to feed him the first two days and still had zero issue with bfding. It really has to do with your body and how much it produces, baby's latch etc

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • Thank you so much ladies! Glad to hear that others have had a good experience after Csection!

I nursed my first after an induction and c-section for 18 months.  We had a hard go of it at first but we stuck with it and got through it.  I had a c-section with this one and am successfully EBF'ing him as well.

  • I don't have personal experience with a C-section.  I just wanted to say that it may just be a coincidence that you had a tough time nursing afterwards.  I never was able to successfully latch my 1st son, and I exclusively pumped for 7 months (the last 2 of those supplementing with formula).

With my 2nd, we nursed for 16.5 months, no problems.  He never had formula.  So, it might just be that moms have a tougher time with their first.  I feel like I knew what to expect the 2nd time around, and I was more comfortable handling a newborn.

  • I had a C-section after being induced and nursed my son immediately once they brought him to me in recovery.  Was your hospital baby friendly?  Did they know your intentions to breastfeed?

I was in a similar situation with long failed induction then csection. I made a big deal about doing skin to skin immediately but ended up having bad tremors and had to be strapped down. I made DH take his shirt off and do skin to skin with the baby until I was in recovery and allowed to bf. Not sure if it was that or just the luck of the draw but so far so good over here!

Don't have anything really to add as these are my first, but I also had a terrible time getting started BF after my C section so I understand your frustration.  Wish you the best!

    Edit: I can't spell... :)
  • I had an induction and a C-section and have had no issue with my supply the past 6ish months.

    Same thing with me.

  • I had two scheduled c/s. I nursed DD#1 until 17 months and DD#2 is still nursing at 20 months. Just nurse as soon as you're allowed. My hospital wouldn't let me until I was out of recovery, but that was only about an hour.

  • Our hospital is baby friendly. I am going to ask for skin to skin in the operating room, if I have to have another c section. I don't know if they'll allow it but don't see why not. I've also decided that I will not introduce a pacifier for 2 weeks and bottle for a month.
