More sleep help

Another hard night with Nicky has made me decide to ask your opinions. Sleep Easy says you can start sleep training at 4 months, but do you think that's too early?

I'm thinking he may be teething and his reflux/gas issues are part of his problem. I'm a little at a loss as to how to proceed. His sleep doesn't seem to have a pattern anymore. He used to give us a long stretch of about 5 hours, then wake every 2-3 until he woke for the day around 7 or 8. Now he sleeps maybe an 1-3 hours at a time, mostly waking every 1.5 hours. He eats anywhere from a sip to 5 oz (again, no pattern) and zonks back out.

Teething? Growth spurt? I have no freaking clue. It's like being a FTM all over again. He flat out refuses to sleep laying down, probably due to reflux. I'm going to call the pedi about his Zantac dosage today so I'll try working on getting him to sleep flat next week. I'm going to buy all the gas drops today (pediacare and mylicon), but can I give him both at the same time? Tylenol doesn't seem to help much. He also gets constipated a lot so I worry his tummy hurts but the pedi seems unconcerned (translation: not helpful).

I'm a zombie. I'd like to get him sleeping better, but he still seems so young for sleep training.
WWJ12D?

Sorry this is so long. I'm sleep deprived, so I know this is rambly and I'm probably asking stupid questions. I can't seem to kick my brain into gear!

Re: More sleep help

  • We had our 4 month check up on Thursday and the Pedi said that we could start sleep training if needed. Abigail has been fussy lately too and all her patterns (mostly day time) have gone out the window. Her gums seem a little swollen so I am blaming it on teething right now. Whatever the reason it sucks.

  • I personally would not sleep train at 4 months; it sounds more like the 4 month sleep regression.  I would just keep trying different techniques.  Are you still swaddling?  Maybe that would help, or sleeping in a swing or car seat or something.  I wouldn't worry about forcing him to sleep flat at this point; Tucker didn't sleep flat until like 7 months.  Good luck and remember, everything is just a phase :)

  • Personally I think 4 months it to young. It is probably a sleep regression, teething, gas or reflux. I agree with PPs you mentioned  swaddling or even sleeping on an incline for the reflux. LO slept in a swing/rock and play for the first 5 months next to our bed before we moved her to the crib.
  • Right now he's still sleeping in the swing. I wouldn't worry much about it, but he has a flat spot and the pedi said the swing will make it worse. He doesn't like sleeping while I hold him because he gets overheated. He is a swaddle Houdini so we haven't swaddled since he was maybe about a month old, although in the swing I can sort of pseudo swaddle him by tucking a blanket around his arms. He breaks out if it but if I leave his feet free he stays in it longer.

I don't mind cosleeping (that's what I did with Em for a while) but he's not into it. :(

I forgot there was a 4 month regression. Lordy. OK, so I'll get the Zantac adjusted, get the gas drops, try gripe water...and pray for the best I suppose.

I really don't think he's ready to sleep train. If he gets upset and I can't get to him right away he freaks out. He seems more babyish than Em did at this age, if that makes sense? And we didn't even start sleep training her until somewhere around 7 months. I just wasn't sure if was thinking that because I hate sleep training and want to avoid it.

Any other suggestions? I'm about to lose my mind over here. Did I mention that Em still wakes once a night too? Nights are very busy over here.
