Gift for Baby Shower Hostesses

I am having a baby shower soon, and I would like to get something special for the 2 women hosting it. They are going above and beyond to arrange and host the shower, and I feel guilty for not contributing. They're paying for all the decorations, invitations, diaper cake, food, and beverages. They both say that's the purpose of a baby shower, and that I should not be helping with anything. But I can't help but feel like a lazy whale :) Does anyone have any gift ideas or things you've done for others in the past? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Gift for Baby Shower Hostesses

  • I am interested in these responses as well. Mine is supposed to be a "Surprise Shower" - although, I kinda Nancy-Drew'ed it and figured out it's finally this Saturday! - but because of this it also means the wonderful women in my life did all the hard work.

I read it was proper etiquette to get the hostesses something, and I really want to do so!

Wasn't sure if people send flower, grocery store gift cards, something elaborate, something small. And should all hostesses receive the same gift?

  • I got my hostesses each a bath and body works shower gel and a loofa (and maybe a lotion, I forget), and I included a little note that was something like "thanks for the beautiful shower, hope all your future showers are just as great!"  Or something like that.

  • I got my SIL a sephora gift card, my MIL some of the local coffee she likes, and my 2 other hostesses different oils and vinegars from a local store (We are in Chicago & they are in michigan). I got my friends bottles of wine. Stonewall kitchen also has some cute gift sets if your hosts are into cooking/baking. They also had some cocktail ones.

At my shower when I was pregnant with DD I got the each a nice bottle of wine (the varietal I knew they specifically liked) and some nice local chocolates (local for me, I live in a different state). And of course a thank you card!

Eta: for my bridal shower I did the shower themed bath and body works thing like pp said. Thie same girls did my baby shower so I had to do something different, but they all liked that one as well.

  • I got my ladies gift cards for a local cupcake shop that people around here love and special thank you cards. Had I not been completely exhausted the past few weeks, I probably would have gone with the Bath and Body Works gifts cards, but that required a much longer drive and those cupcakes really are life-changing. ;)

When do you usually give them the gift?  Should you prepare it before the shower so that you can give it to them right at the end, or prepare it after the shower and give it to them at a later date?

There were 4 people involved in planning my shower (Sister, mom, MIL and sister 2) all had different levels of involvement. Sister 1 is by far doing the most, so I got her a $50 g/c to a local massage place and a cute iphone case for her new phone. Mom is doing quite a bit, so I got her some cute camera relate things, since she is big into photography. Other sister and MIL are doing tiny things, so I got them each a g/c for coffee. I wrapped them all up in cute boxes, but I have the same question as Mizoo...

I don't know when to give them to the girls! After the shower? Before?

  • I gave at a later date because I wanted the thank you notes to be authentic & specific to the shower...like "I loved the chocolate covered strawberries and the decorations were so cute!" Or whatever. So I had to write the cards after the shower of course.

  • My mom, MIL, and SIL are hosting the shower and I'm planning to invite them all to get pedicures with me prior to the shower, and then pick up the tab.
  •  .Its not a must for gifts but given the complexity of the day. I thought it was worth showing some gratitude, So I got each one a gift basket from Gift tree. They loved it.
  • Since it is spring I gave GC's for pedicures at a local spa.

  • I gave each of them (4 people total) a bottle of wine. I wish I could have given more, but I think they understand that most of our money is being saved for baby stuff. I will certainly help throw their shower or buy an extra nice gift when it is time for them to have a baby though!
  • I had two hostesses: MIL & best friend. I got each a $50 g/c to Lush cause they both love that store.

  • I just sent flowers. Nice ones, with a nice thank you card. And then also included the hostess again when mailing out thank-you cards for all the gifts.
  • I hadn't even thought about this til I saw the thread, thankyou prepared ladies for the warning!

MiL and family friend will both be getting flowers and a bottle of wine plus very mushy thankyou cards. I might bury them (gently) behind the present table while they're not looking so that they can be given them at the end of the present-opening ritual.
  • My mom hosted my shower and had three of my friends help set up and arrange games. So I got my three friends earrings from kate spade and then my mom some earrings and a clutch from there, because she was the actual hostess.
