Depends on your needs/wants, activities, and budget.
For example, our stroller criteria-
DH prefers the maneuverability/look of a three wheel model.
We need one with good handling on sidewalks and light trails-
but did not need anything that could take on sand or rough terrain.
I wanted a light model- under 20lbs to make it easy to get in and out of the car for me.
We don't need the stroller to be able to handle two kids (this will be our only)
We do want the stroller to be suitable from birth forward (in our case this meant an optional infant seat attachment or a full incline)
Compact and simple fold.
And I wanted a nice shady canopy since we live in a semi-tropical climate.
For our needs a City Mini fit perfectly and was well within our budget. But something as simple as preferring 4 wheel strollers or needing an all terrain stroller would mean that it wasn't a good choice for you.
For car seats- I have no idea. My best friend has the same model car as us and loaned us her infant seat (never wrecked or even in in fender bender and only a year old) so I didn't bother to do a ton of research. It'll fit in the car, it'll snap onto the stroller, it meets all safety standards and it was free. Hard to argue.

Love out Chicco Key Fit 30 system for DD (17 months now). We had to switch her to a convertible right around her b-day and she is consistently in the 80% for height and weight. We got 2 bases so we had one for each car and we still use the stroller.

I agree with the above posters- its all about what is important to us.
For stroller, we bought the Stokke Xplory. I LOVE that the baby will be really close to me, the handle can adjust really tall (for hubby) or really short (for when kids of our friends will want to push the stroller for a bit). I LOVE that I can sit the baby upright and use it as a highchair when we go out (no need for yucky high chairs at restaurants) as well as use it to change diapers in the stroller when in a recline position. It is very versetile, unique and beautiful. It is a bit on the expensive side, however.
For a carseat, we bought a convertible (Maxi-Cosi® Pria 70 Convertible Car Seat with Tiny Fit). It's not overly expensive (we paid under $300) and cuts down the cost of needing a few carseats over the course of the child's early years. Because it comes with a tiny fit, you can use it for infants. The one con is that you have to pick up the child out of the car seat when you get out of the car. Unless we have a very colicky baby, I dont see this as an issue - you can easily transfer sleeping baby to a bassinet (part of the stroller) or baby wear when out and about - you get a better opportunity for bonding/holding/making sure the baby is doing ok, as opposed to having baby in a car seat that you take out of the car, into a stroller, then home, all without ever needing to move baby - it may be convenient, but its not great for baby.
I love the Jané, this stroller is high seat allows it to fit on restaurant tables, the chair reclines. It's a european brand that's in the US! It's also a Jogging stroller which saves you money and its light weight. I love it!
We have a safety 1st convertible car sear. We love it. As far as a stroller goes, we actually are waiting to buy one until end of may because our 2nd LO is due in June. So we're getting a double stroller. For now, we either use shopping carts or a simple umbrella stroller. Like pps said though, depends on what your needs are.
I got the Britax B-Agile/B-Safe travel system. I may regret getting an infant seat that will need to be replaced so soon, since I want to baby wear anyway. But it was good value and overall highly rated/recommended by bloggers and reviewers. The other one I hear tons of good stuff about, that is also a good value, is the Chicco Keyfit.
I'm looking at the Nuna for a car seat because of the huge privacy shade and it's only 7lbs!! I think my munchkin will be a chunker. And I'm pretty set on the uppababy vista. I want that bassinet at my bedside!
For my first I had a Peg Perego 30/30 infant carrier and the Peg Perego UNO stroller which worked like a travel system. I loved both of them, but if I had it to do over knowing I wanted to have more kids at the time I would have bought the Mountain Buggy Duet stoller and used it as a single (you just remove the second seat and you can add their carry basket for more storage). Then whenever I had another child just put the second seat back. I would still keep the Peg Perego carseat.
You may also get some helpful answers on the baby gear board. It is just a matter of preference.
If you plan to do extended rear facing, which is highly recommended, make sure you get a convertible car seat that allows for this. Some have shorter shells than others and your child will outgrow the height maximum sooner. I believe Britax seats have shorter shells. Clek Foonf, Chicco Nextfit, Graco My size/size4me (this one has several names depending on seller), and Diono Radian have taller shells that allow for extended rear facing.
We bought the Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant seat, then several Chicco Nextfits for each of our vehicles. As a PP said, they all pass the same safety inspections. The more expensive seats usually just have added creature comforts (nicer stain resistant fabric, sippy cup holders, etc). You cand find good deals on them though, especially on the Internet. Albeebaby.com carries a wide variety of seats and has great prices.
All car seats have to pass the same safety inspection. It boils down to what works best for you. Weight, comfort level, convenience ect.
This.
We needed one that would fold small enough to fit in either car (me and OH both have small cars). One that would fit in my car with room for a pet crate OR a full grocery shop.
One that was lightweight (I'm tiny so need to be able to lift it and baby)
One that would be easy enough for my husband to work out (he's had a head injury so not great at figuring things out)
Ended up going for a Graco travel system. The stroller folds down small and folds out easily, with one hand and the car seat attaches to it or to the in-car base then unclicks when you pull the big, obvious, red handle. Neither weighs particularly much. The stroller folds down to a standing position which means no bending to pick it up (this is a bonus) and will fit in my car with plenty of space for the pet crate and an average grocery shop. It also has 2 cup holders for the parents and a huge storage basket underneath, which is nice.
There are comfort padded bases available for the stroller, a rain cover, a sun shade and footmuffs that fix on as well if we decide we want them.

Do you have any advice/opinions on the Maxi Cosi Micro AP carseats? I'm planning to buy that and when they grow out of it get the convertible one you bought.
