Timing of feeding

I'm told that 10 mins is a feeding, how long is this true for?

Re: Timing of feeding

  • That's hardly true for most babies, I think...

DD often fed for 20-30 minutes as a newborn, and maybe up to 3-4 months.  And then was down to about 15 minutes until 8-9 months.  She's now 16 months and will do 5 minutes sometimes, and 15 minutes sometimes.

There is no time frame that defines a feeding.

  • How often were the 20-30 min feedings and did you switch sides half way through?
  • Thanks :) in still in the hospital with nurses breathing down my neck and I can't help but second guess everything I'm doing. I think it'll be easier then I get home
  • DD only fed for 8 minutes the first couple weeks then stretched to 20-25 minutes. Now at 3 months she averages about 12 minutes.

  • My LO just turned a month old yesterday has been eating about 15 minutes a feeding since day 1. She typically takes one side per feeding.

  • My nursing sessions were never shorter than 25 min when DS was a newborn. Quite often they were 45 min+. At that age, let baby eat as often and long as they like, or every 2 hours during the day and 3 hours @ night.
Around 3-4 months, it was 20 min. or so (had switched to feeding off 1 side 90% of the time) and around 5 months, 5-10 min.

  • So here's a crazy question, when do you sleep? I can't produce milk without getting any rest
