Babies: 9 - 12 Months

what am I doing wrong?

oh my goodness.... this has been happening for a few months now but as soon as DS wakes from his 2nd nap, he is a clingy, whiny machine. I don't know how to engage him, or keep him occupied, or happy. Currently he wants to walk on his own so badly but he is making me "hand walk" him all over the living room. When I take him over to another toy or something to distract him, he just melts down until he gets his way again. He uses his walker all morning but by the afternoon he's done with that and wants me. Once the weather gets better it will be easier to take him outside but right now I'm just worn out. When my H gets home, I usually run upstairs for a little break so I can recharge. WHAT CAN I DO????? I can't deal with the clingyness for hours until I can pass him over to H.

Is it possible he's not getting enough sleep on that second nap. Can you try soothing or rocking him when he wakes to see if he will fall back asleep and get a longer stretch in the pm?

I do everytime.... he usually sleeps for 1.5 hours with 1 wake up in between that. So I go in there and put him back down. then when he wakes again, I sit with him and see if he'll go down again and most times he's awake by then.
  • Mine gets clingy when she's tired. It's usually more towards the evening. We've noticed she wants to go to bed a bit earlier now.

  • I feel your pain - mine does the same thing with the walking as of a week or two ago. I've attributed it mainly to separation anxiety and the novelty of walking. I hope it will get better when she actually can walk on her own... Not sure when the clinginess will slow down, though.
  • You know, I'm gonna have to agree with the other ladies that he might still be tired…..what does his morning nap look like? Could you put him down a bit earlier for the afternoon nap? I find that timing is EVERYTHING and if I don't hit the window the nap length is too short and I have a cranky baby until bedtime and on those days I put him to bed very early.  We had this problem for a long while too but then we helped him to fall asleep independently (not with CIO though) and he started sleeping longer for his naps and he never wakes up crying anymore! I actually had to invest in a video monitor so I could see when he woke because he doesn't cry, he just sits there and plays! It's quite nice and he seems much happier now!

  • Thanks everyone! I was putting him down 4 hrs after his first nap but I think I may need to go back to 3 hrs, maybe even 3.5 hours after. I've even started putting him to bed earlier too. He kept pushing back his nap times so I thought he was ready to stay awake longer. Guess not !
