Stepping up in IUI?

We've been TTC #2 for a year now. We did 6 months of TI and 2 rounds of IUI. I finally did HSG recently and found that my right tube is slightly blocked, not completely blocked but not that clear either. So far for the two IUI's I did not take any ovulation stimulation meds, because I ovulate on my own fairly regularly. But recently I've been ovulating on my right ovary only, so my doctor suggested clomid for the next IUI, and try to get my left side to ovulate as well to increase the chances. But DH is really concerned about multiples. I am kind of indecisive about it, not sure if it makes sense to just keep waiting every cycle to see if i will ovulate on the left side. I feel it's time to step-up. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you

Re: Stepping up in IUI?

  • Well depending on how you respond to the Clomid, there is a strong possibility you can have multiples. I always had anywhere from 3-6 follicles on Clomid depending on the dose, so obviously I could have potentially ended up with triplets at any time.

There is also a chance you can do several Clomid cycles and end up with 0 babies. I did around 6 or 7 cycles, and got 0 babies. I also O on my own every month, and both of my tubes are open.. So there's that.

    It's really a dice roll.

    Good luck.

  •  Castillo you are right, thanks for the input. I guess we just need to discuss the risk more with the doc and make a decision. Most likely I will go for a low dose....

  • Idk about the risk of multiples on others, but I'm on a very low dose of clomid, and my doc said there is still a high risk of multiples. Dh and I are ok with that, however. After 4 years
We don't care how many babies we get lol

Your chance of multiples with Clomid is about 5% more then a women not on fertility meds which is 1%. Clomid with IUI increases that too only 8%. This is coming from my RE. Hope that helps!

I got pregnant with Clomid twins but twins also run in our family. We lost my DD's twin at around 12 weeks. Sorry to mention loss but I wanted to share my experience. I was in 150 mg of Clomid.

  • My triplets are Clomid babies...so it of course can happen, but with proper monitoring, and calling off any cycle with more than 2 follies, you can lower your risks. Good luck!

  • Thank you all very much! Im going to see my RE today to discuss more in details the risk of multiples, and whether it's the right timing for me now.
