Dentist Anxiety

I am so embarrassed to admit this, but I have SEVERE dentist anxiety. I think it stems from getting a cavity filled when I was a kid without novicane.

I am WAY overdue for a visit, and I keep on putting it off but I know i need to go.  (Previous pregnancy, plus my medicine, and just general fear, in combination with avoiding it all winter long due to Reese, my teeth need a LOT of work.)

I am scared. I go on Thursday and I already can't sleep :(

I wish my appointment was for tomorrow, because then I can get it over with.

Re: Dentist Anxiety

  • I'm sorry you had that experience. Not sure what to tell you to help make you feel better. I love going to the dentist.

  • I hate the dentist. I had braces 5 years and can't stand my teeth messed with. I actually cry every time. Haven't been in like 3 years.

Ask for the gas, and ask to wear headphones so you don't have to hear the scraping. Close your eyes and try to doze.

  • I could have written this post. I loathe going to the dentist and I'm WAY overdue.
  • What's planned for your upcoming appointment (I am a licensed dental assistant)? Are you just getting cleaning and POE (periodic oral exam)? If so, get that over with, and then ask for a premed of Valium and in-office treatment of N2O2 (nitrous oxide) for any subsequent appointments you may need for treatment. It's much better to get a filling vs. a crown, vs. a root canal and crown. Good for you for making the appointment and going!!
  • Thanks everyone!

I wish I made the appointment before Thursday, but they didn't have any openings on Monday. My birthday is on Tuesday and I REFUSE to go to the dentist on my birthday. Reese's chemo day is Wednesday. That leaves Thursday.

I know I will need a lot of work, so I am hoping that between now and April 25th, (when I go back to work) I can get most of it done.

  • The waiting and anticipation is the worst. Just tell yourself you're going to get it over with and that you have been through much harder stuff. Good luck!

    Also, happy birthday!

  • I have a constant death grip on the chair when I'm at the dentist...no matter how much I tell myself to relax I can't. Just commiserating I guess, I hate the dentist
