Drinking

No, not the fun kind.

Is it normal for a toddler to chug the whole glass at one time? I guess I just always picture kids carrying around a sippy cup for a while. But E chugs it all, then an hour later asks for more. Or sometimes asks for more right away.

Also, who is still using sippy cups? E primarily uses sippies. She can use a straw cup and does when we go out and for smoothies. But they aren't spill proof (take and toss) so we limit her use of them. She is completely inept at an open cup, despite trying it frequently. When do we need to be transitioning her?

A has been using a straw for water since 7 months and milk since 10.5 months. She chuggs her milk-like pounds it down! She sips at her water much like you might expect. I have always read that sippies and bottles should be gone at 12 months, although I don't know any one IRL who has done that.

Avent makes a spill proof straw cup if you are interested. We got them at Buy.Buy.Baby. They come in a two pack, pink or blue, and several different sizes.

@kmc84‌ - that's interesting what you've read because my pedi wanted us transitioning to sippy around 10-11 months (we tried earlier though) and to be using it now in addition to pushing the straw cups.

Sometimes H will chug his drink (milk or otherwise) and sometimes he slowly drinks it. I'm wondering how much water/juice he should be getting. Milk we were told to shoot for 12-18 ounces a day (I think I'm remembering that correctly) but he's been waking at night all of a sudden again and we're beginning to wonder if he's thirsty. We try everything other than food/drink but usually he won't settle until he has about 1/4-1/2 of his sippy of milk.

    I'm no help, sorry.

@mnj05 I know I have seen that on here (the bump) and I've seen it in a few books, but I honestly can't remember which! Our pedi likes everyone using straws at around a year, although they are ok with sippies for a little longer. At her one year visit, the doc was thrilled she had been using a straw for so long.

We use straw cups for milk and water. I used sippies for water when they were just starting, but they weren't interested in tipping them without assistance and I had heard some things about sippies and oral development ( @kmc84- is that what your doc is saying? ). I'd also read that sippies are so much like bottles they do encourage guzzling. Anyway, they will down a cup of milk in the am or before bed a good amount of the time. With meals, they can also drink a whole cup on occasion, but they take their time. They never really chug water unless it's been awhile and they've been running around. I don't know the appropriate milk amount for this age, but one of my boys drinks about 12-16 oz and the other drinks 16-20 oz. The pedi was fine with those numbers. We don't do juice unless we absolutely have to, so water and milk are it.

@Ruthie04‌ they stated that prolonged sippy use can effect palate growth and tooth placement and that they see more issues like cavities with sippy use. (I suspect the cavity issue is from parents sending their kids to bed with sippies)

  • @kmc84‌ That's what I had read as well. Something about it being so close to a bottle that it can contribute to some of the same issues as prolonged bottle use. There was something in there about the tongue placement while drinking too. We got a handout on bottle tooth decay at their last pedi appt, but the pedi never said anything about sippies. That's really interesting. I wonder if it is newer research? There doesn't seem to be a lot of publicity out there about straws over sippies. I'm just glad the boys always preferred straw cups!

@TJ1979‌ 16 oz of water per day?! That's awesome! I'm always pushing water on my boys, but they take a sip and run away!

Sophie guzzles milk. And water. All at once too. And sometimes she wants more right away. I have no idea how much she drinks bc she drinks so much in a day.

That makes me feel better! I'm a big drinker though and always have a cup with me, so she is probably trying to be like mommy some.

  • DS chugs his sippy of milk! It is crazy to watch but you can't slow him down no matter how hard you try. That's just how he likes to drink it. He does either a sippy or straw interchangeably. If he is sitting at the table and eating then he can have an open cup. He is good at it but if he isn't sitting still it will definitely get spilled.

  • M is a camel, it is a fight every day to get him to drink any milk or water. He drinks no more than 8oz of milk nor 8oz of water a day.  The only thing he remotely "chugs" is his daily smoothie. He can drink 10oz in a setting. I am hoping that once the weather gets warm, he will be more thirsty?

We use straw cups exclusively now. We were using sippy cups when we started, but Transitioned around 13 months? My pedi never said anything.  M and I go to "class" weekly and I saw all the other kids were using straw cups, so I looked up on the internet and there are more pros for using straw cup.

We use take and toss for water, milk, and smoothies.  M only gets milk and smoothie in his high chair, so if he decides to spill, the damage is contained. As for water, if M is feeling naughty, he will deliberately turn the cup upside down and cause the water to spill out. But then, I've tried other straw cups and they all spill when M turns them upside down, or bang it hard against the floor/table.

I have a sipper not a gulper. We use straw cups-- I like the ones I have. 1 is valves and almost leakproof, the other one only leaks if you leave the lid open. I think either approach is fine though. :) Safe sippy 2 has the valve and that is what D takes his water in. Then we use the thermos straw cup for milk. That is how it turned out when we tried every cup under the sun to get D to drink milk out of. At daycare they drink out of paper Dixie cups, and we use little plastic ikea open cups at home sometimes, but only with extreme supervision. D still thinks that it is fun to dump the water out from time to time.

  • E is much older than G, but G never used a sippy. That said, she CHUGS both water and milk from her straw cup. She is still on 3 bottles a day (we are dropping them slowly), so I offer milk and/or water with every meal but she ends up ignoring food because she likes her drinks so much. It's a little conceding, but good that she likes to drink, I guess.

DS1 is a few months younger than her oldest, and he still uses a sippy (I mean, not the kind with the easy hold handles or anything - just plastic cups with screw or snap on tops) or a straw cup most of the time. He can use an open cup just fine, but he's too often running around like a mad man for me to trust him with one unless he is sitting down for a meal.
