Healthy Go to foods?

So I'm trying to make an effort. Some days are good, some bad, some horrible.  What are your go to healthy foods and recipes?  I really enjoy peanut butter and banana on whole wheat toast, fruit smoothies (which I'm always up for some good recipes) and chicken salads, but beyond that, sometimes I get very stumped.  Send me some good healthier food ideas girls!!

  • I'm pretty good about eating fruits and veg, but I need more protein. Tonight I'm going to fry some eggs and put them in the fridge to have for ... everything. Work snacks, breakfast, etc.

I'm also taking a box of instant "oats" (not really -- 7 grain stuff) to work that can be made in the microwave. Adding some honey and butter to make it palatable.

For supper tonight, we're having a southwest salad: corn, avocado, onion, tomato, grilled chicken, greens, ranch and BBQ sauce.

  • I try to make sure all my meals have a protein and a fruit or veggie...snacks are whatever the heck I want.  I also add a tablespoon of almond butter to my fruit smoothies to add some healthy fats and protein.  Easy lunches are things like deli meat, cheese and veggie sticks with some hummus.  I try to make sure my dinners make enough leftovers for lunches so that I don't have to plan those out as well.  We make our own pizza at home on pre-made crusts (DH likes Marie's, I used GF ones).  Way more control over what goes onto them (we keep a container of pre-cut veggies in the freezer for pizzas, we buy the bags of pre-cut stuff and mix them together, mostly onions and peppers).  Also better portion control.  You could buy some shredded lettuce and make buffalo chicken wraps, or anything chicken wraps.  Quesadillas are great because like the pizzas, you can add whatever you want to them.

Yogurts, raisins/craisins, mixed nuts (there's a brand that makes cocoa roasted almonds, sooooo yummy!), frozen greek yogurt bars, strawberries with nutella...those are what comes to mind right away for healthier snacks.

  • so @wtfisup this is going to sound SUPER stupid, so please don't judge me... :\"> but what and how do you eat your veggies? Lol. Most of the veggies I eat are green beans, salads, LOVE tomatoes, and dip raw veggies like peppers, cukes, carrots, etc. in dressing. SO, got any good veggie combos or ways you like prepare them?

  • Oh, and stir fries.  Bunch of veggie and some meat cooked fast over high heat, add a little soy sauce, maybe some OJ, garlic, ginger...done!  I eat mine with rice.

  • I have been loving Strawberry Chobani yogurt mixed with some granola and fresh fruit bits if I have them. Protein and fiber and usually fills me up for hours. Agree with the stir fry also. I use fresh green beans, broccoli or asparagus as a base then add portobello mushrooms & water chestnuts for more texture. And always stir fry so there's still some crunch to the veggies.

  • @Lilygrace48-- Those frozen Greek yogurt bars sounds amazing!! You've awakened a craving...

@MrsRahl -- My current favorite smoothie is a banana, frozen wild blueberries, yogurt, and almond milk. Would also be wonderful with oj instead of milk. For any smoothie, easy to throw in a handful or two of fresh spinach; doesn't affect the flavor at all, and you're getting extra nutrients so easily. (I should take my own advice!)
  • @jclester614, I buy Yasso brand, but I think it's fairly local to the Boston area.  There are national brands that sell them now, though, I just haven't tried those ones.  Enjoy!!

  • I'm pretty good during the day but my downfall is wanting something sweet after dinner, so I've been focusing on swapping my desserts out for fruit instead. Tonight I had a big bowl of fresh strawberries sprinkled with stevia. :)

My favorite ways to eat veggies: Roasted with olive oil and salt Put into a foil packet with salt and a bit of butter; grill them! Chopped salads Make a veggie hash and tip with an egg Make a veg and protein wrap ETA: those should be bulleted. Stupid phone.
