Diaper Changes

How do you keep LO's hands out of the diaper area while you're changing? DS had C-diff a few weeks ago and while I'm fairly certain it was because of antibiotics, I am so afraid of it coming back. I've tried giving him a toy (or anything else) and he just throws it away after 2 seconds. I've tried telling him no and popping his hands. Nothing seems to work. Help!

Re: Diaper Changes

  • I'm in the same boat. If I say no and pop his hands he just laughs and thinks it's a game. When it's a poop, I give him my phone and that keeps his occupied long enough. I've also discovered he likes Velcro so I have something with Velcro near by.

Sorry about the c-diff! That's no fun!

We have the same handsy problem. The other day I looked away for a split second (with my hand on her) and next thing I knew the diaper, poop and all, was flying everywhere!! Lol. I noticed she loves to hold her shoes, so I've been giving her those. Plus she holds her legs up straight to try and get them on, so it helps lol.

  • Same problem here. I try to use toys or a attempt to block with my hand.

  • We have the same problem. I know it's not great, but I give him his sippy and it helps for about half of it. He seems to really hate me putting the diaper back on, so we flails and bucks like a crazy man.

  • Often I can blow on their tummy while I'm changing them and it makes them focus their hands on trying to make my face go away, al though it doesn't always work either, but hopefully something else you can add!

  • if dh is home he usually distracts her, otherwise i give her something to play with...she loves the wipes container...and we used to just give her another diaper to use (i hung on to smaller sizes so i'm not wasting valuable diapers).....
sometimes i'll throw on the tv too to distract her...but usually as long as i can give her anything to distract her hands it works...until she tries to put that in her down below area....

  • Thanks! I guess I will keep trying new things. I like the velcro idea. He loves buttons so maybe I should sew some buttons on something and give it to him during changes.

I do not have this problem yet, since DS is always too busy screaming and fighting me when he gets his diaper changed. I guess there is an upside to the fighting.

    P.S. What is a C-diff?

C-diff is a bacteria infection. It can be spread through poop. DS was on antibiotics at least 2 times in 2 months and the pedi thinks that is what caused it (kind of like how you sometimes get a yeast infection after being on antbiotics). But now I'm paranoid about it coming back. His case was pretty mild and we treated it with probiotics (the "good" bacteria).

ETA: his symptoms were lots of diarrhea.

  • Yikes! DS has never reached beyond his sugar lumps but I know that day will happen.  I don't have any advice, since he typically flips over about 3-4 times during a diaper change.
