Any experience weaning from SNS?

Long story, but basically since DD was a preemie and I wasn't given the pump for the first 24 hours so I have never had a full supply. I've seen a LC since she was in the NICU and I took everything (domperidone, blessed thistle, fenugreek, goat's rue, malunggay, etc.) and tried everything to get my supply up, but never really made more than half of what she needs. So I've been using the medela supplemental nursing system since she was like a month and a half old. She turns one next month (how?!) and I really want to stop using the SNS. I'll continue nursing her for as long as she wants, but the SNS is a pain in the ass. Does anyone have any experience weaning from an SNS? Do I just stop using it and offer a sippy of milk after I nurse her? TIA!

Re: Any experience weaning from SNS?

  • I have 3 month old twins that were in the special care nursery so it took them a while to nurse. We started using the SNS when they stopped taking the breast to incentivize them to nurse. Once they got stronger at nursing (at about the 2 month mark) I would start with the SNS and then after a few minutes I would sneakily pull it out. They never noticed. After a week (maybe less?) I just stopped using it altogether. If they don't get enough then I give them bottles (I have a scale to do weighted feeds or I just see if they fuss). Occasionally they get lazy and don't want to nurse to I have to break it out again. Usually it's only for one feed. Hope I helped since my babies are younger so it's not quite the same. Kudos to you for breastfeeding with a SNS for so long! They are a pain!
