This is a great question. I am high risk bc of a blood clotthing dosorder AND history of pulmonary embolism. My OB is a high risk OB and offerred to work with another OB or midwife if I chose to go with someone else. I have stayed with him because I like his technique. Pretty sure a general OB can consult with a high risk OB, if you choose to stay with someone you have a history with.
I don't know a lot about this- however I do have a friend with a blood clotting disorder who is on her third pregnancy (no complications) and she has never been considered high risk. She has the disorder that starts with L.

Thanks for everyone's input! Is it fair to say that I will be referred to a hematologist?? I have a potential diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome in case that means anything to any of you :-) The reason I say potential is that the diagnosis requires a history of miscarriage or thrombosis + the abnormal blood result to be repeated 3 months later. So I won't know for sure whether that is the correct diagnosis for at least 2.5 months.
I was referred to a perinatologist (MFM), so I guess you could consider it "high-risk". I was lucky because my peri specialized in thrombosis and pregnancy. I still had my regular OB who delivered my son. The peri saw me throughout my pregnancy and advised, giving directives to the OB. For example, she advised that I be induced at 39 weeks. She prescribed the lovenox and managed the switch to heparin etc. Mine was protein c deficiency.

I have the same diagnosis. My doctor has me on baby aspirin and daily injections of Lovenox. I have to get blood work done often to check platelet levels. I had 3 miscarriages so they were comfortable making the diagnosis. I am 7 weeks and 3 days and we are looking good so far (fingers crossed). DO NOT google it. The info out there ranges from very positive to very negative. Trust in your doctor and try to breathe :-) It is the best any of us going through this can do. {{HUGS}}
tezotter Thank you so much for your reply! I am glad to hear that the treatment seems to be working well and that there is hope. I am eager to talk to my OB tomorrow, and it's empowering to know what I'm up against so that I can ask the right questions when I see her :-)
