starting DC and nervous about colds

hi there :) my DS will start daycare at 12 weeks (he's 10 weeks now). he's going to a daycare center. it's a 5 star, new facility and tour went great ... but i know kids catch colds from the best daycares too. has anyone read up or had experience with things that I can do to at least help the situation a little? i am feeding breast milk and i know that helps his immune system, but it's not everything. we also just started him on the vitamin drops.

  • Unfortunately I dont think there is much you can do to prevent colds or any other illnesses that baby might be exposed to at daycare. My doctor told me something comforting about daycare and illnesses though: it's better for your LO to get sick and build his immunities now versus when he starts kindergarten because now he's not missing much, whereas in kindergarten he'll be missing out on learning.

  • Nothing really you can do. The first year is the worst. However each year gets better. DS is 5 and has been at daycare since he was 12 weeks old he had 2 colds this year that lasted about 4 days. He rarely gets sick and has been that way the last 3 years.

  • Yeah.. He's going to get sick. Nothing to be done about it really.
I SAH with DD, but we started early childhood classes for babies/toddlers together when she was about 5 months old, first class and a few days later she had her first cold. We never stopped going because of it or anything, it's supposed to be good for their immune system anyhow. She's 2 now and still gets colds from the other kids. It just happens when you are around other kids.
I will say a cool mist humidifier, some tylenol and saline spray may be wise to purchase now if you don't have any yet.

  • Use the humidifier, saline spray, and NoseFrida. Baby Vick's is okay once a day if your doctor approves it. But these are just measures that help once your LO is sick.

There's really nothing you can do to prevent it.
  • There's not much you can do. The only way to grow the immune system is to challenge it and that includes unfortunately naturally contracting diseases.

Colds happen! At 22 weeks, it's likely your LO will have had a cold before then whether or not he's in daycare. DS wasn't in daycare until 18 months old, but he'd still had several colds before then. Besides, by the time babies are the age your child will be when he goes into daycare, they're totally able to handle little sicknesses.

Look at it this way, kids who are in daycare early are less likely to have colds once they get elementary school. It's going to happen sooner or later, and this way you get it over with earlier.
