Dumb Q about meals

So somewhere along the line I noticed Emery doesn't do meals anymore. She's so flipping picky and a PITA about what she wants to eat now. She will sit for breakfast and graze through lunch and dinner. I try to sit her down for a formal dinner and she will eat a bite and claim she is done!

For some reason I'm second guessing if I'm messing her up somehow. I realize as long as she is eating it's probably not the end of the world. Does this sound off? What is everyone else's toddler doing in regard to meal times?

Re: Dumb Q about meals

  • She is starting to be more picky. All she wanted yesterday was milk and bananas and cheerios. Usually she will eat breakfast lunch and dinner, but if she doesn't like something she pushes it away.

  • We wait for a second wind at the table. Generally she kind of picks and doesn't really eat for about a half hour. Then all of the sudden she decides to eat. Makes for some long nights. This is even after she originally says "all done". Perhaps try extending meal time?

She does this to me sometimes. She's been doing it at restaurants and it's super annoying because we have to leave, but that's when she decides to finally eat!

  • And I think my other problem in answering @jfresh question is we don't eat at the table as a family. MH gets home late so me and him eat later and em eats in her high chair at 5. I am usually keeping her company in the kitchen by washing dishes or whatever and talking to her.

Same here. Last night she basically had peas dipped in ketchup for dinner. She usually gets one good, solid meal a day and the others are picked at. I try to keep her snacks/grazing on the healthy side to make up for it but of course she's always begging for cookies.

At her 18mo check up the pedi said to at least do the routine of sitting down for meals and attempt to have her at least try everything. She said to try not to show that it pisses me off because then it just becomes a game or a power struggle.

I will have to keep the power struggle/game point in mind!

  • Haha no. If it's mac n cheese I save it for the next day. But if she doesn't eat it at dinner she's probably not gonna want it for snack. Addie is too smart for that trick! ;)

my wonderful eater isn't so much now, not so much a picky eater, but a quantity eater. She'll have 3 bites and stop. its irritating.

  • Robert still eats like a horse and will eat anytime, anywhere. He gets breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner.

  • Em nibbles all day but usually only eats well for dinner. I've noticed that she eats better if I sit down and pay attention to her versus being up and cleaning dishes or dealing with Nicky. I try to roll with whatever she seems to want as far as amount of food. Her pedi said that It's healthier for adults to do 6 small meals instead of 3 bigger ones, and that she's just doing it naturally.

I try to give her options so that she can decide what she wants for breakfast and lunch, or sometimes she will ask for something specific. If she says she's done and asks to get down, I let her down so that she can run around the kitchen while we finish. Sometimes she's done but wants to sit there and play with the buckles on her chair, so that's what she does. I'm not too stressed over making her sit with us just yet, and she is a kid who responds well to having that freedom. She sits longer with us now that she knows it isn't a big deal if she gets down.

The only food related thing she does that annoys me though is telling me she wants a snack when really she just wants to rummage through the cabinet and try to play with daddy's coffee maker.
