Kiinde breastmilk storage kits: Any moms that have used this brand? feedback appreciated.

Hi Moms -- I'm about to be a first-time mommy and, unfortunately, I'll be heading back to work after baby is 3 months old.  I'm planning on breastfeeding for at least one year and need some advice on some good breastmilk storage brands.

I am interested in Kiinde for a few reasons:  1) milk is stored and directly consumed through the bag, so no bottle clean-up.  2)  the kit comes with a warmer for either the bags or the bottle.  3) Pump converter claims it works with all major breast pump brands.

Any experienced mommies have any thoughts on this brand?  Or others that they loved?

 Many thanks!

  • It seems super wasteful as far as the plastic and the cost of the bags. If you plan to pump and store any significant amount of milk those twisty tops are going to drive you nuts with the amount of space they take up. Also, it looks like the nipples come from this system. What if your LO doesn't like them? That is a real possibility. I got a first years milk storage thing for about $10 and I either use target bags or lanisoh bags and it's really not that big of a pain to pour the milk.

Another thing about pumping into bags, it's very hard to tell exactly how much milk is in there. Also, you might pump more or less than you want to give LO at a particular time so there will still be some pouring involved and it would be a pita with those spouts. I've used 4 different brands of pumps and they all have a pretty standard size for bottle necks so don't be swayed by that.

Bottom line, looks fancy for a "casual pumper" but breast feeding is a lifestyle and this is totally impractical.

I always pumped directly into the bottles for the next day. The bottles we used (Playtex Vent Aire) fit the medela pump parts perfectly.

ETA: I would cool all the bottles in my cooler bag (so they were all the same temp) and then combine bottles as needed.

  • So glad I found and read this. We were planning on using this system too, but it looks like we should re-think that. Back to square one.

Hi, I'm a FTM and my little guy is just 4 weeks old so I don't have a whole lot of experience in this area compared to a lot of the PPs.  However, I have this system and LOVE it so far.  It's really convenient and easy to use.  The bags do seem somewhat wasteful but you can recycle them.  I haven't found any problems with pumping a smaller amount... those have been useful to freeze just in case my LO needs a little more during feedings.  I've been lucky that he took to the bottle right away and hasn't had any nipple confusion.  If your LO doesn't like the bottle, you're suppose to be able to use your own preferred nipple along with the adapter provided, but I don't have any experience with that.  Good luck!

I bought the system. I've pumped directly into the bags (once) with my Medela PISA using the adapters that came with Kiinde system. This works, partially. For some reason the adapters, if screwed on tight, somehow suction is lost on my nipple. If I loosen the adapters, max suction returns, but I was so afraid the bags would fall off, so I don't think it's great for hands free pumping. I'd want to hold the bags. I will be contacting their customer service about this. As for the nipple issue, my LO isn't really used to any particular nipple yet, but I was able to use the Kiinde bottle bag with my Tommee Tippee nipple, no leaks or anything. I used the adapter that came with the system (the system includes 10 adapters, so The Tommee Tippee adapter that one would use for their TT pump can also be used for that type of nipple). That being said, my LO takes the Kiinde nipple just as much as the TT nipple. Yes, there is some pouring between bags, to make smaller quantities, but I don't have to wash 12 bottles each night (like if I pumped into my medela bottles then poured into my TT bottles). But, the bags are an approximate volume. For those that want to keep track of an exact volume, this may not work for you. I found that if I pour a measured 2oz (from measuring cup) into the bag, it sits at just above the 2oz line.

  • Update: I called customer service and they said they were aware of the adapter issue I was having. They said it has happened with a rare number of systems and they are shipping me new adapters for my Medela pump (which are longer and therefore won't interfere with the valve and cause suction loss). They responded within 24 hours (on a Saturday) and are shipping the new adapters free of charge.
