Stomach issues have gotten worse?

My little one is 3 weeks old, will be 4 weeks on Monday. He has always had the similac sensitive formula. He has always been pretty gassy, but we are typically able to help it and he quiets down. He didn't have but maybe 1 or 2 gas fits in a day. The last few days, he has been horribly fussy. Crying constantly. Barely napping at all during the day. He has slept about 1 hour total (multiple 20-30 minute naps)  in the last 5 hours. His last feeding, he spit up 4 times. We always make sure to burp him every 1 oz, and we make sure we gets burps each time. The other night was really bad...we slept maybe 2 hours. He wouldn't sleep unless he was ON me, and even then, he was squirmy. Every time he eats, he squirms so much, almost like it hurts to eat.  He has done this for his whole life. He downs 5 oz during each feeding, and does this every 3 hours.  The doctor thought maybe he had a lactose sensitivity, so he gave us enfamil gentlease to try. He wouldn't eat it. I tried to have him eat it for about an hour, but he just cried and cried until I gave him his normal stuff. It must not taste good, or it hurt his belly. Either way, he drank maybe 3 sips of it. I figured that it would start to get better, or more consistent, by a month old. It seems to have gotten worse. I'm at a loss.  It's beyond frustrating not knowing how to fix it, and it's obviously exhausting to hear crying all day every day.  Not even a car ride will keep him happy...he only sleeps for a max of 30 minutes. Then he starts doing his hunger cry, but feeding him seems to start the whole process over again.  Looks like I'll be heading back to the doctor, but I really want something to work soon. I have no idea what the issue could be!

  • My boys have feeding issues also- it's so frustrating because it's a never ending cycle. Ask your dr if he could have reflux and they can give you medicine? Also maybe a dairy intolerance so try enfamil nutramigen or similar alimentum. Good luck- we are bringing them to a GI dr in two weeks and it can't come quick enough.

  • Did your pedi talk to you about the possibility of reflux? My LO had the same issues: very fussy and crying during feedings, arching his back in discomfort, eating constantly, and hiccups 3 - 5 times a day.

We were given a prescription for liquid Zantac and that helped tremendously. We saw a huge improvement within 24-48 hours.
