Pelvic girdle pain

Has anyone had experience with this? I've been having it but didn't realize what it was until yesterday. Last night I could not get to sleep the pain was awful and I could not get comfortable. I pretty much always sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees but even that wasn't helping.

If you experienced this what helped you? How did you deal? Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Pelvic girdle pain

  • Do you have it in the front or back? I have it in my sacro-iliac (SI) joint. It is SO painful. The little things that help the most are no high heel, no stairs, no crossing your legs, no slouching/leaning/lounging comfortably whole sitting (always sit upright), no carrying LOs on one hip. Basically, you need to keep your pelvis balanced from left to right, so nothing that outs you off balance. Even sit down to shave your legs and put on socks and shoes, standing on one leg is terrible.
To help the pain, I practically live on my yoga ball. I sit on it while getting ready in the morning, while eating meals, and while relaxing in the evening. Sit on it, roll your hips around, bounce. There are also some yoga poses that help, cat and cow, the 4 pose, and others you can find by googling SI joint pain.
It is truly the most uncomfortable part of pregnancy for me by far. It has made me cry lying in bed at night.
Oh yeah, and keep your legs together. Squeeze your knows while turning over in bed. No lunges or anything like that. And YH needs to massage your hips. If I lie on my side, and mh presses on the hip that's up, it is like heaven.
    GL, it sucks.

  • I have SPD which is basically the same thing. It hurts so bad that there are times I had to crawl around the house to get places like the bathroom. It gets worse with walking so when I have to I take baby steps with my legs very close together. I have a stool in my shower to help with washing/shaving my legs so I dont have to lift my legs apart. I sit to get dressed/dishes/cook too. The pillow between the legs helps some but honestly the only thing that has made it manageable is lots of rest with my legs up and very limited walking. Ive been on modified bedrest for the last two months which has helped. Ive also heard heating pads/sitz baths help. Its inflamed down there. Sorry you are going through this. Its awful when the pain gets so bad and also harder to deal with when we have other LOs to care for.

  • Oh dear, I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Like PP I had SPD with my first pregnancy (and I'm sure I'll have it this time around, too). Definitely keep your legs together when sitting to standing, getting in/out of bed and car, etc. Also pillows between the legs while sleeping and icing once in a while (I know, weird, right?), a frozen bag of corn/peas was just right!

I also got a girdle (a mini one) to wear to work. It helped a little, I guess, but not much. GL!

  • Thank you all. My pain is way low back, like in my butt kind of and so far only on the right side. I definitely need to work on my posture, sounds like that is something that can help. I appreciate the help! This is so fun, but I am glad to see that this isn't totally out of the ordinary!

  • Yep, that's the SI joint. Spd is usually in the front in the pubic joint. I highly recommend the yoga ball.
