Intro to bottles and formula

I've been exclusively breastfeeding for the first month, but after seeing the ped. today we will begin introducing bottles so I can start preparing to return to work and what not.I have been stocking up a little on breast milk, but I will eventually use formula and continue breast feeding  as I can for a while longer.  Please share what kind of formula works for you and how much you spend.

Re: Intro to bottles and formula

  • I did the same thing-breastfed for a month then started using formula.  We tried Enfamil Newborn and Enfamil Gentle Ease and neither of those worked for him.  We started using Gerber and so far so good!  We use both the Soothe and Gentle.  A 23.2 oz tub will cost anywhere from 22.99 to 26.99.  We recently started buying it at Sam's.  You get more-36 oz for 28.50.

As far as bottles, I can't say I tried a few-because we bought one kind and stuck with it.  Avent bottles with petal design slow flow nipple.

  • Try using Target Up&Up it's typically $10-15 cheaper then name brand. It goes on sale often and it's often on Cartwheel for 5-10% off. My pedi said the generic is the same as the name brand.

  • Same situation here. EBF for the first 6 weeks and then we introduced formula. We started with Similac supplemental but recently switched to similac sensitive because of LO's sensitive stomach. They range from $25-$31 depending on size but I usually just get the biggest size to save a little money, plus Similac sends me coupons for $1, $2, and $5 off occasionally so that helps too!

We use Avent bottles and LOVE them. They are the only bottles LO will drink out of without choking on BM/Formula. Even newborn nipples are too fast for her on other bottle brands. Good luck! :)

My daughter stopped nursing at about 2 weeks old so I pump and she gets most of her meals from that, but we've always had to supplement also.  We use Enfamil Gentlease because she was getting Enfamil in the hospital and she does fine with it.  It seems to constipate her every now and again, but then the BM will usually clear that right up.

In my area the big canisters retail for about $26, but CVS seems to have them on sale quite often for about $22.  You can also sign up at the website (of pretty much any formula you start using) and they'll send you coupons.  I've gotten about $30-$40 worth of coupons already and DD is 11 weeks old.

Since I mainly pump, I use the Medela bottles (and slow flow nipples) for both formula and BM.  There are bottles that are completely clear which we put formula in and there are bottles that have black and yellow writing on them that we use for BM.  It helps keep straight how much she is getting of what.

  • With this, if they're getting both BM and formula, how do you know how much formula to give? I've got 3 month old twins that have only had BM but I'm not able to keep up and am using my freezer stash. I will need to start supplementing in the very near future. They are taking 4 oz of BM every 2-3 hours during the day and about every 4 hours at night.

I am a FTM so by NO MEANS am I expert, but here is how we are supplementing.

Since I EP, I know that I produce anywhere from 22-28 ounces in a day now.  (It took me awhile to get my supply to this level)  We always offer the BM first, so she always get all the BM I provide for her in a day.  From there, we try to keep it under 5 ounces of formula, but some days she just wants to eat more and will get closer to 10 ounces of formula.  She rarely spits up, so we don't think we're overfeeding her.  The pedi is very happy with her growth.

I just went off the guideline that EBF babies eat about an ounce an hour.  I know that FF babies need more formula as they get older.  We try to keep her in that 24-28 ounces of food a day right now, but there are occasional days where she gets closer to 30 ounces of food between BM and formula.

Again, I am no expert, I am learning as I go.  DD and pedi are happy, so I am happy.
