Pregnant after a Loss

::Lurking:: question about UTI during pregnancy and getting pregnant right after m/c

Hi ladies. I was on this board in Feb. because I had gotten a BFP and then miscarried only a couple of weeks later. Since then, I have been battling multiple UTIs and not gotten AF. I am posting here because I know that it is not appropriate to post about BFPs on the m/c board but honestly, I am in limbo and was wondering whether anyone else has experienced this. Anyway, I had an m/c on Feb. 20 after having gotten the BFP on Feb. 7. I went in for weekly blood draws and the HcG levels were very low so it only took until March 5 or 6 for the level to be zero. DH and I had sex about a week later. I feel so stupid for having done that because I really did want a mental and physical break, but it happened. I didn't even think it would be possible for my body to ovulate at that time. In between all this, I had a major UTi that I took tons of antibiotics to clear. The only good thing about that is I was very thorough about it and went to a urologist to make sure it was gone. Since the m/c ended, the doctor said to come in after I got my next period. I never did. I even signed up for acupuncture on Monday to help regulate it. But yesterday, I bought a PT and it was positive. I cancelled my appointment because I feel like I should deal with his before doing anything else. I know what you ladies are thinking, but I am not here to ask you if I'm pregnant. I know that it is Impossible for you to answer, I know that I need blood work to confirm that and will go next week to do so. I only have two questions for anyone who is interested: did you or someone you know get pregnant right after hcg went down to zero or do you know any health risks of getting pregnant right after m/c? I'm also concerned about having taken antibiotics although I don't know whether I was pregnant then (in fact, I'm not sure whether I'm really pregnant now). I do have some of the symptoms though. if you have had experience with a UTI during pregnancy I would be interested in knowing that, too. If the doctor confirms it, I will definitely re-intro on this board. I remember your community being especially supportive when I was on it in Feb and I am hoping that I can return. Thanks ladies!

If your HCG went to zero and you had a BFP, you are pregnant. Many women have UTIs while pregnant. You should call your doctor to discuss your concerns about the antibiotics. But you don't need a doctor to confirm you're pregnant.

    ETA: congrats!

  • Sounds like this is a new pregnancy to me! Congrats :) My friend had a terrible uti right before she found out she was pregnant and had taken a round of AB very early in her pregnancy. She just had her little rainbow boy a couple of weeks ago and he is perfectly healthy. I hope you have a happy, healthy pregnancy!

  • Do you know the name of the antibiotic you took? If so, I'm not sure where you live, but where I am we have a hotline called Motherisk. They know safety information about prescription and over the counter medications. You can also ask a pharmacist if it was pregnancy-safe, they usually know this information or know where to look. When did you take the antibiotic exactly? Was it before you had sex or after?

After my m/c I did a bit of research to figure out if waiting was absolutely needed. I also asked the NP who took care of me during my m/c. She said there isn't good evidence about benefits/risks of waiting to TTC after a m/c or of trying right away, and each doctor will give you a different answer. Mine said to wait until first AF, but others say 3 cycles, and others say you can try right away. But basically, there is currently no good evidence to say which is best.

I hope you are pregnant and can put your mind to ease about the antibiotics! Congratulations :)

  • Thank you SO much everyone!  I am overwhelmed by your support.  Yes, I know it makes sense for this to be a new pregnancy.  I think I am still in shock and need a medical professional to say that I'm pregnant.  Your advice and support means so much.  @Sweetiepops, I live in NJ.  I am definitely going to address the medication with my OBGYN as soon as the weekend is over.  I swear this kind of thing ONLY happens to me over the weekend when I can't reach anyone.  I took two antibiotics.  One was Nitrofurantoin, which is a Class B drug and the other was Cipro, which is a Class C drug.  I did Google it and there are conflicting reports on whether it is safe for pregnant women, but it seems as though there is not enough substantial evidence to say whether it is or is not safe.  I definitely took the first prescription the day after sex for five days and the Cipro over the next seven days since the UTI was clear but then returned.  I am hoping that it was too early on to have a major impact on my system.  I have had enough of this m/c business.
