Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Lifetime crib vs simple crib..... ?? STM's needs your suggestion plz.

I just can't make up my mind. Keeping in mind plans for a second baby ( not until for the next 2 yrs) what should I buy a lifetime crib that converts to a full bed or just a simple regular crib. My view - 1) lifetime crib - kids will have their own full bed, but will have to have them in separate rooms ( considering the space) when they grow up. 2) regular crib - first is going to use the crib until second is here and later can have bunk beds ( more fun) or something they like. Your suggestions and more importantly second time mom's what did you do ?

  • I'd go with a simple crib. We got our convertible crib from my sister, and it's almost 10 years old. It was insanely expensive but is extremely well built and beautiful. Nevertheless, her kids wanted to pick out their own beds when they got a bit older. So she gave it to me when I had DS (now 3) and he also wanted to pick out his own bed when we transitioned to toddler bed. Now my DD has the crib and I'm guessing she'll also want to pick out her own bed when the time comes. I think it's more fun that way anyway. I don't think this crib will ever convert to a full-sized bed.

  • We got a convertible crib only because we like the looks of those better. We have zero intentions of converting it, and plan to reuse for baby #2 if/when that happens. My main reason for not wanting to convert: most of the beds, when made full-size, have a weight limit of 160lb. Since I have a big out of town family (both in numbers and size), we usually use all beds available when they visit. (Kids have 'sleepovers' in the living room). This bed having such a low weight limit just doesn't work for us.

  • If I could do it over again, I would just get a regular crib. The convertible that we got is gorgeous, but my daughter gnawed on it while teething and it now looks like it was attacked by beavers. Now we'll have to refinish it before we convert it. Plus, we didn't buy the conversion kits at the same time, so the toddler bed kit is no longer available and I don't want to put my 2 year old in a twin just yet. It's ended up being a hassle.
  • We got a convertible with the intention of converting it to a full bed for DS; after he gnawed all over it, there's no way I'm keeping it after DD is finished with it. I do love the fact it converted to a toddler bed with a rail; that alone justified the expense.

  • I got a convertible crib because I liked the style, but I'm not ever going to convert it. When DS gets his big boy bed next January then I'm going to make it into a bench.
  • We have a convertible but never intended on converting it. DS1 went right into a twin at two with no problems

  • I have a convertible crib for both kids. DS is almost 3 and is using the day bed. I plan to convert it to a full bed in the future. I felt that it was silly to buy a simple crib when for just a bit more you can get a convertible one that can be used for much longer.
