Cold / virus

After we left the hospital and came home, I wound up up getting a pretty bad chest cold that took over a week to get over. I tried everything I could think of to keep the germs away from baby Cruz, wore masks while feeding him, hand washing and sanitizer to the extreme, Lysol, etc you name it... My little man still caught it :( he will be 2 weeks tomorrow and it is the worst listening to him struggle to breathe and cough like crazy. I took him to the pedi yesterday and basically he is too young so they can't give him anything to fight it off. We have the cool mist humidifier, saline drops, and have been putting him in the steamy bathroom 2-3 times a day. Wondering if anyone else has had a sick newborn at home and any tips to keep him comfy and get over it quicker? It seems to be worse after he eats, the formula is thick in his chest I think and that's when he coughs the most. Feeling terrible for him...

  • You could ask about using baby Vicks. If they don't want it on the baby (I don't know the rules about that) you could put it on you or on a cloth near lo so he is still getting the effects without it being directly on him. Other than that just wait it out and hang in there. If he feels warm take his temp so you can report it to the pedi right away if he gets a fever.

  • Emma caught a cold her second week too. I pretty much did all that you were doing, and would squirt some breast milk inside her nose to loosen up the mucus before getting it out with the bulb (snot sucker.) It resolved after 5 or 6 days. Hope he feels better soon!
  • We had to go to the Childrens Hospital because of this for observation. Scarlett was 15 days old. I think my dr as just covering his butt because the hospital didn't do any tests. They just suctioned her nose with a heavy duty wall suction. It helped a little bit but 1.5 weeks later she's still a little congested.

It stinks to have a little one sick. I know you mentioned saline drops but are you also suctioning his nose? I was worried about doing it too much but they said I could do it every hour.

Good luck! I hope he feels better soon.

  • @HappyWife01‌ I am suctioning his nose with the bulb, but the pedi told me not to do it too often, only when I hear him struggling... So I have been trying to do it in the am and at night when it's bad. @nisnyder‌ I read about breast milk up the nose, I'm formula feeding can you use that too? How were you doing it? Thanks ladies!

  • My baby got sick when he was maybe 3 weeks old. I think he caught it from his dad and I. They confirmed it was RSV and had the same symptoms as your little one. They told us to do the saline, humidifier, and steamy shower. They also did breathing treatments and gave him albuterol which he got through an inhaler.
  • Don't use formula in his nose. Breast milk is used because it is sterile and has antibodies in it so might help with the cold. Formula would just clog him up more.

  • Yes, what Jenstwins said-I would just squirt some in there while she nursed, but I wouldn't use formula. Just keep doing what you're doing-as long as he's not getting worse, it'll run it's course and be over in a few days. Hang in there, mama...
