As you may remember I teach 7th grade. I looped with my students so I have my same group of kids from last year. Two of my students are some of the best kids ever. They spent the entire first half of the year leading up to LOs birth volunteering in my classroom, doing anything and everything I needed. They did the same last year, even more after I told my classes I was pregnant. They are truly amazing and sweet (one even bought LO an outfit and the other crocheted her a blanket). My heart hurts at the idea of not having them in my class next year. I really want to give them a small thank you gift for all the help they've been to me the past two year. I know I shouldn't have favorites (but we all know we do) so I definitely want to give them something, probably school related, quietly but still clearly a thank you for the help, so other students don't feel like it's for favoritism. Any ideas?
I will also be checking to make sure this is allowed, if not I may default to a nice card...but they've just been fantastic these past two years, so I hope I can let them know that!
Re: Gifts for students?
I second the idea of a card with a nice note, since they are still in your class. Or if they like to read, a book would be a very appropriate gift. Depending on how strict your administration is, you could invite them to eat lunch with you and bring in pizza or some other food they like. For my 8th graders who are no longer in my class, but helped out as student aides before my maternity leave, I gave them gift cards to the local movie theater.
