Ear Infections

My son has had 2 ear infections over the past month. He started with a bad one in his right ear. We did the 10 day antibiotic. Then at his 18 month check up, about a week after he finished the medicine, he still had an ear infection in the right ear. We did a 10 day round of another antibiotic. It is now over 3 weeks since his 18 month check up and his follow up is Wednesday. He has a fever again. The doctors keep saying it is because his nose drains into his ears. I am skeptical and feel as if they are just blowing it off. He had multiple ear infections last year too. Has anyone been through this? What if I find out he still has an ear infection? Any advice is greatly appreciated. TIA

Re: Ear Infections

  • What are you skeptical about? The nose can drain into the ears causing infections. Have you asked how they can be prevented? Do they have a solution to the multiple ear infections?

There are several kiddos here who have had tubes put in. It helped most of the kiddos, but a few are still having issues.

    Kid #1 - 09/03/12
    Kid #2 - maybe???
    Diagnosed with Severe Ashermans
Hysteroscopy #10 - scar tissue grew back reblocking my right tube
#11 or IVF with scarring still inside?

We give LO cod liver oil everyday. We got the strawberry flavor on amazon and she actually loves it. Its a home remedy that my family has used for years to stay off antibiotics. DD went through 2 antibiotics before we got this and we've had no trouble since. I even take it everyday.
ETA: we got DD's oil on Amazon...just make sure to keep it refrigerated after opening!

  • I am afraid it is something more than drainage. We were just at the doctor this morning and he still has an ear infection in the right ear. They are trying another antibiotic. :(

  • Has it been the same antibiotic every time? It could be that whatever they are giving him may not be effective for him.

  • No, its been different each time. The medicine we pick up today will be a third type of antibiotic.

  • The APA recommends an ENT referral for 3 ear infections in 6 months.  I HIGHLY recommend you go see an ENT and if you have other factors I'd consider allergy testing.

We've been down this path and it sucks - I won't lie - BUT with the right ENT on board it can be great.  We have an egg allergy, tubes and are on the way to get adnoids removed.  The tubes helped with the ears as far as the pain and oral antiboitics (you can do drops right into the ears) but we are still getting consistent infections - the suspicion is that her adnoids are enlarged (her dad had his tonsils / adnoids out around 7 years old)

So I'd ask for an ENT referral - or go straight there if you can.

What does your gut tell you is going on?  (ear infections do come with head colds - snot not draining properly is exactly where it comes from - but that doesn't mean its ok)

  • Have you considered having a chiropractor check LO out?  I know this is a little "alternative" for a lot of folks, but it does make sense if you think about it--subluxations (bones being out of alignment) in the neck can cause issues with draining properly, which sets kids (and adults) up for ear infections.  It's a very low-intervention method to consider--if it were my LO, and she was getting chronic ear infections, I'd give it a shot before considering tubes or continuing to keep her heading back for antibiotics every couple months.

Full disclosure--my dad is a chiro.  Funny story--he treated an ear infection I had as a kid with an adjustment.  I promptly drained and threw up all over the back of his car.  He loves that story.

Hope your LO is better soon!

And I should have added--in no way does what I said mean that the one replaces the other!  Done well, chiro and traditional medicine working in tandem can do awesome things :)

  • YES!  Agreed :)  We've seen a chiro since 3 days old - yet still had tubes and on our way back ;)  BUT I do think it helps her heal faster / better then without - I think we would be in a worse place with out the chiro support - but for us it wasn't enough.
