Help weaning baby off supplement formula

I have a two month old who was almost ebf the first month. My anxiety kicked into overdrive around week six (on citalopram) and we started supplementing with a couple 3 or 4oz bottles a day.
Before supplementing, W preferred one side (faster flow and more milk), now he refuses the non-preferred side 9 times out of 10. The end result is we both get frustrated.

How can I undo the damage I've done and wean him off the formula? Also complicating things - a 2 night stay 27th his grandparents as DH and I are both in a wedding in a few weeks.

Thanks for the advice!

  • Keep your patience. Try to nurse as much as possible and offer the non-preferred side first. If he refuses to take it, let him have the preferred side and pump the non preferred to maintain supply.

don't stress. I know it's easier said than done but it's the worst thing for you and baby.

  • This is a time when @AmyG would give good advice, but the mean girls ran her off! I will give the best advice I can, though. We also had to supplement in the beginning and were able to wean off formula. I agree with PP's advice. Nurse as often as possible, and if LO refuses one side, be sure and pump to maintain supply. You might also try pumping the non preferred side for a few minutes before nursing to get the milk flowing. While nursing, you can massage the breast (start at the top and massage towards the nipple) to keep things flowing faster.

If you think your supply is a bit low, you can try power pumping for 3 days in a row at the same time each day (pump 10 min, off 10 min, repeat for an hour). This should increase your supply. Be sure and drink tons of water and you can also try flax seed and oatmeal to increase your supply. Some women use fenugreek to increase supply. It didn't help me and made my stomach hurt, but a lot of women swear by it. You can find more information on kellymom.com.

If you try these things and are still struggling, I would contact an LC for advice. Also, be sure you are pumping every 3 hours when out of town to maintain supply! Good luck! Remember that any amount of breast milk is good for your baby, and try not too stress too much! I have anxiety too, and it was so much worse PP, so I know it can be hard not to worry! The most important thing is that LO is taken care of, and it sounds like you are doing a great job with that! :)

  • Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely going to try the power pumping and take this coming week for nursing only
