Breastfeeding

Vasospasm

I'm getting vasospasm of my nipples after every feeding.  My nipples turn white and there is burning pain that radiates from my nipple up the side of my breast.  I'm applying heat after every feeding which helps, but if I don't heat them or keep heat on them, the pain can last for hours.  I saw an LC yesterday, and she suggested the heat and part of the issue is that he is clamping down when feeding because of a forceful letdown.  I was just reading about different supplements and medications that can help, and am wondering if anyone on here has had any luck with anything besides just the heat to treat vasospasms?

Re: Vasospasm

  • For me, it just took time. Mine stopped at about the 7/8 week mark. They suck but I just used heat to relieve. Someone mentioned making a rice sock that you can microwave and place in your bra. I never tried it but seems like it would help. I hope they subside for you soon.

Thanks, I'll try the calcium magnesium!  It definitely is better when the latch is better and we had some good luck yesterday nursing in more upright positions to get him to clamp less and no vasospasms, so I'm hopeful that eventually a better latch will take care of the problem.  I am using a heating pad at night when it's bad and have rice socks and those lansinoh therapearl pads heated in the microwave for the day.

  • I had them with Ds2. He to would close down cause I had a forceful letdown. I would unlatch right before my letdown and let it spray into a burp cloth then relatch. When ds had a bad latch the vasospasms were terrible. Improving the latch and time they get better. I used a heating pad and had a rice sock which seemed to help some. I had a LC reccomend reuse able hand warmers but u could never find them to try it.
I hope it gets better. If it is really bad there is medicine you can be put on to help.
