3rd Trimester

Exposed to Fifth's disease

I just got a call from DD's preschool that a child attended her class with Fifth's disease and if we are pregnant we should seek medical help. How serious is this? Can I wait until my next appointment, or should I call the emergency line? Normally I would call the office, but they already closed for the day.

  • Unless you had direct contact with her or feel ill then I would wait until Monday

  • It can wait until Monday. They can check to see if you're immune. I'm a teacher so this was something I asked my doctor about when we started ttc. He said that something like 60% of women are immune to it so it's not usually a concern, especially if you haven't had direct exposure.

Most likely, you're fine but give them a call on Monday and verify.

  • I'm a teacher and we thought it was at our school too. My Dr checked to see if I was immune to it. Blood test. You will should be fine til Monday.

  • I had a child in my class with it, I waited. Besides the blood test they aren't gong to do anything. Most adults are immune from having it as a child and don't even know it.
Baby #2 is on the way!!

  • This happened to me last week, I am a teacher and one of my students and one of my coworkers had this, I showed no signs or symptoms and the doctor was saying how after your first trimester, there's really not anything to worry about. They didn't even think is was necessary to do the bloodwork! :-)
