3rd Trimester

Induced w/#1: STM what is the likelyhood of it again?

I was just wondering if anyone had their first and second babies induced? I was over due with #1 and no signs of progress so we decided to do the induction. Just curious if my body will know what do to this time with #2. Anyone w/ 2 or more with multiple inductions? I am little scared of going into labor on my own even though I would rather go naturally. Just curious I know that every pregnancy is different but thought I would ask..? TIA.

  • Great info on the topic here:  https://www.childbirthconnection.org/article.asp?ClickedLink=1072&ck=10650&area=27

How long did you go before inducing?  I think it's important to remember that 40 weeks is simply the average length of pregnancy and that just as many mother will go "over" as go "early".  As long as pregnancy is progressing without worrisome signs, there's no reason to induce just because you hit 40 weeks.

  • No advice, but I am in the same boat. DD was induced because of my high BP. I still think it's healthier to go into labor on your own, I just hope I recognize it!

  • I was induced at 41 weeks with #1 and #2 and both were 12 hours from start to finish...and water broke with #3 at 41 weeks and had a 5 hour labor.  Barely any progress with all three up until go time...

  • Did any of you have any braxton hicks or any kind of contractions during pregnancy.. i was told those are normally signs its progressing or it could happen on its own? im just curious this is my first. i do know braxton hicks are normal and happens in a great deal of pregnancies
  • Everyone has BH - just not everyone feels them.  I've never felt them (well maybe 2-3 times with #2) and went into labor just fine.  I've also had contractions while on a monitor (when doing a NST with #2 as I was "overdue" and didn't feel those either).

    Normal either way :)
  • Thanks for the responses. I was 41.5 my bp was slightly elevated so I was induced with #1.

  • Yea just wanted to know if the people who have experienced false labor had to be induced. i went in to L&D at 18weeks with full contractions but wasn't in labor my cervix was closed, i was sent home after that i never had anymore .. but about two weeks ago i started having tightening, and contractions, as well as other pains the tightening still happens but it is painless only way i know im having a BH is because my tummy becomes hard and i feel pressure but i also have a fibroid which isn't big nor in the way. sorry im way off subject my point is stated in the first sentence tho
  • I was induced with my daughter at 41 weeks. I wasn't even remotely dilated or effaced and the doctors were afraid that my fluids were too low. Actually, one doctor said the fluids were low and another said they were probably fine and my husband and I were just kind of scared and uninformed and decided to go ahead with the induction (which, by the way took 3 days and was all sorts of awful, but DD and I were perfectly healthy, so no real complaints).

Anyhoo, I'm currently 38.5 weeks and have the same questions and fears that you do. I have no idea what it's like to go into labor naturally. I assume I'll know it when (if) it happens. I cannot imagine it being more painful than the 3 days of pitocin/manual membrane rupture/balloon-doohicky they inflated inside me to try to dilate my cervix, but I guess anything is possible. I also have a very large (12 cm) fibroid that might end up necessitating a C-section, so the whole thing might be moot.

FWIW, I asked my midwife and she said that no two pregnancies or labors are alike.

Sorry I can't be of more help just yet, but hopefully I will have some info very soon. ;)

  • i wish you the best of luck not sure how big my fibroid is anymore but last week the doc stated it has grown a little but shouldn't stop me from having a natural labor because its more so on the side of the uterus rather than blocking the birth canal
  • did you have the same fibriod with your first?
  • I didn't. I actually had no idea that I had one this time until I was 12 weeks. I had to go to the ER because I was having horrible abdominal pain every time I ate. Turns out that the fibroid was putting intense pressure on my stomach (or maybe small intestine, not quite sure) any time I ate more than a few ounces of food in one sitting. Luckily as my pregnancy progressed the fibroid moved off of my digestive organs, so I was able to eat normally again in a month or so. Sorry to get off topic ... anyhoo, the fibroid is now pretty close to my cervix, but not completely blocking it, so my doctor thinks that the baby might be able to squeeze past it. The fibroid is actually half the size of the baby at this point, so they're more concerned that it's limiting her growth. I'm having another US in a week to make sure that the baby is still growing. Hopefully everything will be OK and I'll be able to deliver without a CS, but I'll do whatever  the doctor says is best for the baby. I really, really, really don't want to have to attempt a vaginal delivery only to require an emergency CS because of the fibroid.
  • when it's for real happening,,, you'll know, but that doesn't mean you'll have a lot of time so I hear you & your concerns... I wasn't sure I was really in labor with my first until I was admitted, even though I was a week late & the painful contractions were taking over. I still had no idea if maybe it was just early labor cause it was my first,,, then I had him 2 hours later. I was induced with my second to avoid a home birth in case the labor was even quicker & I'm torn now... do I go on my own,, or get the induction? it's a hard one to decide but if I were you, I'd plan to only induce if I were late again. good luck!!!

  • i was induced at 40w3d with ds for low fluid levels. dd slowed her growth at the end, so we were slated for a 39w induction and my water broke at midnight the night before. she was born on her own at 6:36am when her induction was scheduled for 7am. a bossypants from jump street. lol!

it really didn't matter in my case. i wouldn't worry too much which i know is easier said than done. my mommy nerves this time around are that this baby will be a csection to complete the birthing trifecta for me. haha.

  • Had to be induced again ... (Dr. thought her growth was being limited by the fibroid; u/s estimated her at 5 lbs). This time was so much different. I got one tiny dose of cytocec and started having contractions 30 mins later. Baby was born in 3 hrs. Dr. told me second inductions usually go faster ... I was skeptical, but it sure went faster for me!  Incidentally, baby was born at 7 lbs 3oz ... the u/s was a leeeeeeeeeetle off ;)
  • yeah.yeah. member
I was induced at 42 weeks with #1. #2 came on her own at 40w3d.
  • I was induced at 39w3 d with DS because of high bp. And I was induced with dd at 39w for high bp again.
