Teachers-I need some help.

I have a MS in Secondary Education and have been looking for a teaching job for some time. I have very little experience, which isn't great right now in the field and has hurt some opportunities. That said, I got a phone interview with a the district in the county I live in. I know I have to teach a mini lesson (I'm pretty nervous about that), but don't know what else to expect. What kind of questions should I prep for? I know I also have to look over teaching strategies again because it's been a while since I've had to remember any of them by name.

TIA!

What subject matter? My answer would be different depending on the subject.  If you don't want to post here, you could PM me.

Here are a few that would apply to any subject matter, though:

How will you differentiate your instruction for students who perform on different levels?

How will you handle classroom management?

How will you incorporate writing across the curriculum?

Why do you want to teach here?  What do you already know about our school?

What specific courses would you feel most comfortable teaching and why?

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as teacher?

Describe a typical lesson you might teach.

How do you keep up-to-date in your subject matter?

I was also going to ask what subject.

Classroom management and differentiated instruction are always the big ones especially for new teachers. Find out how involved/into the Common Core standards are within the district and read up ALOT on those if you aren't familiar with them - that's the big thing right now.

Communication with parents is also a biggy.
How did I forget Common Core!?  Definitely familiarize yourself for Common Core at your grade level!!! This is very important.
  • I sit in on teacher interviews all the time.

We talk about Common Core, and Next Generation Assessments all the time (how would you prepare your students for using the technology needed for the PARCC Assessments?)  Our district is really in to technology in general, so we ask about how you would integrate technology in to your lessons and ask if you have any experience with the technology that we already have in place (the school's website should tell you a basic run down of the types of technology that they have).  We also talk about differentiation a lot and how you would deal with different learning styles in your classroom.  And of course, classroom management.  We often give the person a classroom management scenario and ask how they would address that student.  Oh, and how do you work as a team and collaborate with other staff members.

    Hope that helps.

Oh, then I have more suggestions! I'm not sure what different programs or initiatives this school uses, but you might want familiarize yourself with the Collins Writing Program in case they use that as well as methods they might use to assess students' reading levels, such as Lexiles. The upcoming English Parcc test has lots of questions that require the students to not only answer questions but to provide textual evidence about how they arrived at their answer; this is also one of the Common Core standards. As a result, I wouldn't be surprised if they asked how you can incorporate activities addressing these skills into your lessons. There is actually a sample Parcc test online you might want to consider taking.

Also, they might ask you about ideas for teaching grammar in context. They could ask you how you will approach teaching difficult texts to students reading below grade level. I'm sure there are more ideas that I am forgetting right now, but if you have any questions/concerns, feel free to PM me.
