3rd Trimester

Measuring Big

Hello everyone!  My last two appointment I have measured big.  At my 25 week appointment my Dr. measure me at 29 weeks and at my 29 week appointment I just had on Monday he measure me at 32.  The doctor never seems to be concerned or really say much about these numbers.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it might mean?  I figured it would mean that maybe the baby is bigger than normal or that I would deliver early but he never changes my due date.

Re: Measuring Big

  • It could also be the position the baby is in. If your doctor was concerned they would send you for an ultrasound.

  • There are a lot of reasons that you could be measuring big. I am measuring 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule based on my fundal (uterus) size.

I have a little bit of extra fluid and a baby measuring almost 2 weeks larger. However, babies weight/size is a guesstimate based off of different body measurements (head and abdomen circumference, femur length and something else, can't remember!)

If it's bugging you, it's best to discuss with your doctor.

  • I measured the same with DD as I did with DS2. (About 3-4 weeks ahead) DS2 was 9lb1oz at 39wks. DD was 7lb13oz at 39wks.   :)   Lots of fluid. But ask your doctor, that's what they're there for!

  • If it's just your fundal height measurement it really doesn't mean a whole lot other than you Ute length. I've been measuring big the entire pregnancy. I was 100% normal at my repeat a/s at 24 weeks LO was in the 52nd percentile. This week I had a growth scan (34 weeks) because I'm measuring 6 weeks ahead in fundal height, this time he is measuring big (via u/s) and they estimated he's at 7 pounds right now. Really the fundal height doesn't tell you anything unless you get a scan because there is a large range of normal depending on your frame, ute and how you are carrying.
  • Fundal height is only a VERY rough estimate and can vary based on how you carry, how baby is positioned, your torso length, etc.

FWIW, I've measured a week or two behind in every pregnancy and my last baby was 10 pounds.  Clearly fundal height meant very little ;)  I have a super long torso so I just measure small.
  • Thanks for all of the feedback!  I also have a very long torso, but am measuring big.  The doctor doesn't seem to be concerned about it I just wonder what it means.
