Seasonal allergies and BFing

I did a search about this and the last thread was in 2012, so I thought maybe we could discuss it again and it might help some other people too.

My spring allergies are already here in full force. Itchy eyes, tears, runny nose, sneezing. I haven't head a headache or sinus pressure yet- but it won't be long if I don't do something about it.

In the past I have always taken Claritin once a day and that helped so much! I also used a fluticasone nasal spray when I started getting sinus infection symptoms. I don't want to take the Claritin while breastfeeding for fear it will affect my supply. But at the same time-- I know I can't be the best mommy that I can be when I feel bad every day.

What are you other BF mamas doing to help with allergies??

  • as others have said, everything without a decongestant in it is fine, because decongestants can affect your supply. claritin, zyrtec, allegra, singulair are all fine. my allergies practically went away when i was pregnant, but they came back when DS was maybe 9 months old and i started back on singulair. i also use a saline sinus rinse (neilmed brand) which helps a lot, too.

most of these allergy drugs can actually be given to babies and toddlers (for instance singular comes in powder form for the littles), so don't stress about it. for more reassurance, you can check individual drugs on lactmed.
  • I take Cetirizene (Zyrtec) every night, year around.  If not I wouldn't be able to function.  I think the key to allergy season is to start taking something before you get allergies and take it every day whether you feel like you need it or not.  Get ahead of the allergies.

  • Thanks ladies!! So happy to know I can start the Claritin!
  • I have a question about the decongestant (Claritin d) that everyone is saying to not take- I had horrible allergies last spring and am not looking forward to similar ones this year (the only thin that got me through them was Claritin d!) if my supply is fine right now, then is there anything i can do to counter-balance the drying out of a decongestant, like eat tons of oatmeal and fenugreek or whatever, or is it a *guarantee* that your supply will be significantly affected?
