Anyone try Stitch Fix?

Has anyone here ever tried Stitch Fix? It's basically an online personal styling service-- you tell them your size, style, budget and they send you a box 'o' stuff along with styling advice, little cards that tell you how to wear the items and you can keep as much or as little as you like. It seems to be all the rage on the Working Moms board and they got me interested (though I usually never have any trouble shopping for myself!) so I thought I'd give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised! They sent me a pair of awesome jeans that fit like a glove, a top that I loved (but probably wouldn't have chosen on my own) and a couple more items that I liked but the fit was slightly off and a necklace that I also liked but that was too expensive for what it was. What I liked the most was that the little cards showed the items styled with lots of different accessories, which is exactly the area that I get lazy about so I thought it was really helpful.

I know in some other threads some people were talking about how they were feeling dowdy or in a rut and this might be something that you guys would enjoy because it takes all the work of shopping out and sends you pieces that you can mix and match. I swear I'm not with the company or pushing it-- I just thought it was cool and it was fun to get a box of surprise items!

  • I haven't tried it but several friends were very happy with their first box or two.

  • @MissPeansMama They send you a bag and you just toss everything in there and throw it in a mailbox. No shipping fees at all. You have three days to send it back and you only every end up getting charged for the items that you keep. You go online and "checkout" when you send the bag back.

I had the same thought about the sizing but they nailed it for me, especially on the pants and I'm notoriously hard to fit-- I'm 5'11 with a small waist and wider hips-- so things never hit in the right spots. Plus, it's so easy to send back that there's almost no risk. There is a $20 styling fee but you get that back as a credit with your purchase. If you decide to try it, let me know and let me PM you my referral link so I can get more credit!

  • Even though I like to shop-- this sounded interesting to me.

My hesitation is that it seems you are paying retail for everything which is a cardinal sin.

  • I tried Stitch Fix - the pieces they shipped fit well, were on-trend, and my style, but I didn't like the quality.

  • I have been so tempted to try, but I haven't been willing to fork out the dough. It sounds fun, but it will be way more than I like to pay per clothing item.

I KNOW! That's hurts me in principle, too because I'm so the bargain shopper but it's kind of fun and exciting to see what you get so I'm writing off the extra expense as the price I pay to be surprised. My whole box (had I kept everything) would've only been around $230 for 2 tops, a cardigan, skinny jeans and a necklace, which isn't a terrible price point for what you get-- at an average of $46 an item, for hanging out clothes, I can live with that. I definitely wasn't expecting high end brands ( especially since I picked the cheap options).

  • I'm way too cheap for Stitch Fix. I basically only shop when Gap has a 40% off sale!
  • I just got my first box today. I never buy anything that isn't on sale so I'm having a little pain from the prices. I think the quality is very good, though. All the tops I got were super soft and a couple were made in the USA which I appreciated. That said if I keep anything it will be only 2/5 items. I will give them a couple more tries, though. I'm also checking out Tog + Porter. Waiting for a stylist to schedule an appt with me.

@VioletteGrayskies Check out Gwynnie Bee. It's for Size 10+ only. It's not the same as Stitch Fix (i.e. no stylist), it's more like Netflix for clothes. You pay a monthly subscription fee (the cost of which depends on how many items you want "checked out" at a time). Then you add items to your closet and the decide, based on availability what to send you. If you want to purchase it, you can. Whether you get your money's worth depends on how good you are about sending items back.
  • This is going to sound totally college of me, but when you spend good money on clothes that you want to last, do you still wash them in the washing machine at home? Or does that take too much of a toll on them?

This is coming from someone who has never spent more than $30 on a single piece of clothing (usually $20 or less) and shops almost exclusively at Old Navy. I like their style, but the quality, or lack thereof, is making me question why I continue to shop there.

Depending on the material, I still definitely use the wash machine but ours is one without an agitator, which I think makes a huge difference in how the clothes are handled in the machine. I hand wash stuff that specifically calls for it but not much else. I almost NEVER use the dryer on my clothes except for cotton socks and underwear, cheap t-shirts and lounge wear. I hang or flat dry everything.

Wow, size 10 is kind of a weird but good place to start. It probably opens them up to a lot more business.

I was just thinking it would be fun to start our own "bargain" shopping service. If we find something awesome on sale and it's not our size we can put it in a clothing exchange. Too bad not everyone has the same taste. It would be fun, though. I'd love to have someone shop for me, but only if they are good at finding deals. Usually that shopper is my mom. Somehow she found me the boots I wanted in a wide calf and for only $40 and they're leather. I have much to learn.

I'm too cheap when it comes to my clothes, I usually don't buy unless super on sale. I worry about buying  my lo and dh clothes. Sounds like it would be fun to have a stylist since I never know what things look good together.  :))

  • I ended up not keeping anything. None of it seemed worth it. I'm going to give it one more try. Of course, the next available delivery date isn't until June. It seems they're struggling with their success a little.
