C-sections

Anyone here allergic to morphine?

I posted a few months back but spoke to my Dr. today about my reaction to my last spinal. While in labor with DS#1 I had an epidural and was fine. With DS#2 I had a scheduled c-sec and had a spinal. I had a bad reaction to the morphine in it and had an internal itch for 2 days. It was honestly the worst pain in my life and I've broken bones, split my chin, etc. Not being able to make the itch go away for 2 days was torture. Nothing they gave me helped and I scratched half my nose off. This time they said they will not put the morphine in the spinal and will just put the numbing agent. He said that morphine keeps the pain down for 18hrs after and instead they will give me pain meds via a pump that I will have to click as needed.

Has anyone had the pump after your c-sec? If so, how did it go? Was the pain pretty bad?

I had morphine in my spinal for my 1st and 3rd CS and a pump for the 2nd one. Just make sure the pump is set to go right away. I had to wait hours for my pump (do to a hospital error it shouldn't be that way) and the pain was horrible within an hour of the CS ending.
  • I am allergic to morphine. I don't know what they used instead but it wasn't a big deal for them. I didn't have a pain pump though. After they gave me percocet

I had my 2nd c section 2 weeks ago. 1st c section 3 years ago I had the morphine drip and did not have the itch. Not sure if it was from being on the Mag or not. However, with my 2nd c section I too scratched my nose and upper lip to the point it was raw. The Benedryl they gave me didn't help. Hope this is helpful for you and good luck!

  • Ask your Ob about the OnQ pump. It delivers a numbing agent (like novacaine) directly to the incision thru a tiny catheter. No button to push- it's a steady stream for a few days. I had it with my first and I swear, I didn't feel anything while in the hospital. My only complaints were that you have carry around this little pouch which was cumbersome. Also, it leaked and soaked my pjs. I just tucked a washcloth in my mesh panties and was all good . Still had to take Percocet too but there was no itching. They quit doing them when I had my second and I had the morphine itches too. I really wish I had insisted on it with my 3rd b/c I ended up covered in hives and suspect it was the morphine again.

  • I'm not allergic to morphine but I did have the morphine pump after my c section. Honestly I couldn't tell it was there. I could push my button every 8 mins but after pushing it my pain levels didn't go down at all. I couldn't even tell if I had pushed it or not. The Norco pills were the only thing to actually effect the pain I had.
