Quitting Folgard RX mid pregnancy? MTHFR

I've been on Folgard Rx 2.2 that my RE originally prescribed me for my single copy of c677t MTHFR. At my recent 20w appt with the OB, I asked about him about my current meds and he said he'd take over being the prescriber on them. I listed them but forgot to really get into the Folgard until he was on the way out the door. I said "Do I still need to take Folgard?" and he casually said "Nah, just a normal prenatal with folic acid is fine."

I'm close to running out of Folgard and the PaIF brain is kicking in. I didn't get the sense that he really understood why I was taking it. And to make things worse, I can't find anything online to support that it's okay to quit mid pregnancy for patients with MTHFR. I guess the single copy I have isn't as bad as it could be....but still....makes me worry.

I'm debating calling the OB nurse tomorrow morning and asking if they'd prescribe it anyway, if nothing more, for peace of mind if it won't hurt anything. WWYD? Anyone know about quitting mid pregnancy?

Thanks!

  • I don't know about quitting mid PG, but would be interested to know if it's common since I'm on Folgard too. Maybe email your RE to see what they think?

  • My OB didn't want me to quit it (I'm have the same heterozygous mutation you do) but she didn't sound that concerned about it either way.  If I were you I'd stay on it.  Why worry?  And apparently there's no downside.
  • I would be hesitate in stopping. I have no reason behind why I would be hesitate but I would ask to stay on it. Please let us know what the doc says when you ask about it.

  • Pretend I'm not answering this but no way! With one copy of mthfr your body is probably converting about 80% of the folic acid you take so you need to take a higher dose to get the correct amount. Google Neevo if you want-- it's a prescription prenatal specifically for MTHFR. It's actually the natural form of folic acid -methyfolate-- so your body doesn't have to convert anything. That's what I take (I have 2 copies..)

Yes, it is prescription. Cost will depend on your insurance but its fairly pricey. I did mail order and its $110 copay for 3 months. An added benefit for me is no headaches the entire time I've been on it (there's a link with MTHFR and migraines). You can also take Thorne prenatals from Amazon for so it $25/bottle. It has methylfolate in it instead of folic acid.

  • I also take Neevo. I have 1 mutation, which a geneticist actually told me was not a problem. I like the peace of mind that taking Neevo gives me. I pay $90 for 3 months using mail away before that it was $45/month.
