MBK - toddler eating victory

Bradley's favorite food is bagel with cream cheese. I made a smoothie with spinach, banana, peaches, strawberries and vanilla Greek yogurt and gave it to him instead of his usual milk.

He is on his second bagel (which, whatever he needs the carbs) but more importantly...he is downing this smoothie. I gave him a bendy straw which enhances the experience I'm sure :)

Just wanted to see how things are going for you on the front lines

  • Bendy straws are the best.

My kid (like a lot of toddlers I think) looooves rice. The other night I dished up a bowl of rice and a large side of veggies (grilled zucchini, broccoli, peppers) and while she was eating the veggies I said don't forget your rice and she told me "no mom, I eat veggie tables first". What? What kid wants to eat veggies over carbs? And what kid likes zucchini and broccoli? My old nana is a meat and potatoes kind of gal and was appalled that my kid wouldn't eat mashed potatoes, but ate a ton of asparagus, beets and parsnips.

I don't remember all of that thread. Have you tried preparing things differently? DD loves grilled or roasted veggies but steamed not so much.

I think people in that thread were talking about preparing things just the way a toddler likes them (making the wrong kind of macaroni?), but I think catering to their weirdness just reinforces their weirdness. I try really hard to teach my kid to be flexible. Sometimes she freaks if I cut her toast in quarters because she wanted it in halves that day and I just say "don't worry about it, it'll taste the same" while DH would be like "oh no, let me make you new toast". Maybe I'm mean.

  • @rayray007 Bradley thinks rice is "dirty" that's his issue with most vegetables. He was crying the other night because I fed Tyler a piece of asparagus that was "dirty"...

I wonder what gave him this idea? Does he mean dirty as in actual dirt? If that's the case, would it help to have him help prepare it? And he can see that it isn't? Or is dirty code for gross or something?

Speaking of help prepare, DD loves to help and I think this might help her be more interested in eating what she has helped make.

We have started having him help make the food and clean up after dinner. I think it's him playing with plastic toys without seasoning or grill marks. Damn Melissa & Doug...

I agree with you, initially.  But if a kid is like "Fuck yo toast quarters, I'd rather STARVE!" and is willing to carry it through, you have to reevaluate.

  • Yeah, and I know you have to pick your battles. I'm sorry if my post came off as "I'm doing it right because I make my kid eat what she's told." I was just trying to throw out some ideas.
