transition to bottles too early

At Esther's 2 week follow up visit the peds mentioned it being safe to introduce a bottle. Im worried that she will reject the boobies if I give a bottle too soon... anyone have experience with this?

Re: transition to bottles too early

  • We introduced at 2 weeks and he still hates thim at 5 months.  I say try it and just see how it goes.

  • Thanks for all the feed back!
  • I just wanted to add don't wait too long. Also, make sure to give a bottle on a fairly frequent basis (1-2 times per week maybe). My DD#2 refused to take a bottle and I think we waited too long and didn't give her enough opportunities to get used to them early on. It made for a long year! Thankfully she took to a sippy no problem.

  • I'm same as sing2phins.at the hospital and then at 3 wks.  when I introduced bottle at 3wk (she had to be imaged at hosp and bottle keeps her steady), DD almost had partial boob rejection. She didnt like BF in the evenings with cluster feeding because nursing flow is slow and wanted bottles, so looking back paced feeding is really important. But she still nursed well all other times of the day. But she grew out of it or my flow improved or something. Around 12 wk she started daycare so she is bottle only during the day but she is very happy to nurse in the evenings and night.

  • We introduced bottles at 1 week due to my supply issues. He has had no trouble going back and forth between bottle and breast. IMO, flow preference is more of an issue than nipple confusion, so just make sure you pick a nice, slow flow nipple for your first bottles. GL!

  • We introduced the bottle at day 3 due to latching problems. With the exception of a nursing strike when he was about four months old, he switched back and forth from breast to bottle with no problems, and nursed for 19 months.
