Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How much sleep at 20/21 months?

DS seems to be getting less and less sleep lately. He's always been an early riser (6-6:30am, although we've gone through bouts of 5:30/5:45 too). He used to go to sleep around 8pm...now it seems like he's pushing his bedtime later and later but he still gets up at 6/6:30 every morning. Tonight for example he didn't fall asleep until 9:20 even though we first put him in his crib at 8. We haven't changed his routine at all...I just don't get how he is able to get by on 9 hours of sleep a night. His naps are typically 2 hours...sometimes less and rarely longer. He just turned 21 months last week, so I'm curious how much sleep your 20/21 month old gets? It seems like the other toddlers we know all sleep like 12-13 hours a night and still take good naps too!

  • My DS is 21 months and has been doing the same thing lately. Waking up earlier and getting about 9 hours of sleep. I guess I'll blame daylight savings time. Whatever is causing it, it's annoying as hell!

  • Ditto. DD is 22m and for over a month she's been sleeping 9.5 to 10 hours at night. Prior to that, she was at 10.5 to 11 hours for quite awhile. She has also never been a great sleeper and wakes by 6:30 no matter how late she falls asleep. I envy people whose kids are good sleepers!

  • DS is 22 months and for a while now he has been getting 11-11.5 hours at night and a 1.5-2.5 hour nap.
  • DS's sleep has been all over the place lately.  I don't think it's DST anymore - I think it's just a sleep regression....a phase that will pass.  We went through a bout of 5am wake ups for a week or so and we are finally back to normal wake up times - 6:45-7am.  He has been talking in his crib for 30-40 min before finally falling asleep at bedtime - that's new!  He used to talk for maybe 5 min and then be out.  He is getting his 2 year molars, so I think that has something to do with it too.

We still stick to 7:00 bedtime and let him talk and roll around in his crib...as long as he's not crying it's fine with us!  But I do worry about him not getting enough sleep if it's only 10 hrs of sleep a night.

  • can you try putting him down earlier?

when my son started waking up at 5:30 i slowly moved his bedtime earlier until he was back to getting 12 hours. after a few weeks he gradually started waking up later and i moved his bedtime to 6/6:30.

  • We have tried putting him down earlier, later...it still is taking him forever to fall asleep. Last night we put him down a little earlier and it took an hour with crying and 3 trips into his room before he settled down and fell asleep. We did CIO with him a loooong time ago and it worked great--we can usually just lay him down and walk out and he puts himself to sleep. Not lately though. Hopefully it's just a phase but it kills me to hear him in there crying "Momma where are you?! Mommmmaaaaaa!" Gah.

  • My son is 19 months and sleeps a total of 12-14 hours a day. At night he sleeps from 7:30/8 - 6/6:30, so between 10-11 hours and takes a 2-3 hour nap everyday starting at 11:30.

DS goes to bed at 7:30 every night and is up anywhere from 5-6:30...ususally always around 5:30. So most nights he gets 10 hours. He takes a 2 hour nap.

I bet it is a phase until he evens out and finds the times that work for him. Just hang in there.
I agree.  Kids just like to change it up just to keep it complicated.

I feel you!  DS (21 months) has been doing this too!  He used to go to bed at 7:30 - 8:00 and wake up around 7:00; now he still wakes up at 7:00, but sometimes refuses to go to bed until 9.  He starts fighting us as soon as he realizes we are trying to get him ready for bed.  Some nights it takes 30+ minutes to just get him into his room and changed into PJs.  To be fair, on the nights he sleeps 9 - 7, he doesn't seem tired the next day; so maybe he just needs less sleep?

It is SUPER hard when he stands in his crib screaming "mama, no go, please, mama!" over and over again.  *sigh*

  • DD seems to be changing her sleep patterns too. She went from 1h to 2h naps and her night sleep is getting shorter. Usually she will do 12 hours at night, but now it is moving towards 10h
